I am a fan of the show “Royal Pains”. I was watching the most recent episode; there was a character whose skin turned blue when exposed to sunlight due to an odd side-effect of some medication she was taking. I was wondering if anyone knows which medication that was, what it was about said medication that made her turn blue, why she turned blue only on the parts of her body that were exposed to sun, whether that’s realistic, and how one could simulate the effect if one thought it would be neat to have a blue tan for a couple of days (assuming this wouldn’t be harmful).
Thanks,

Sounds like argyria, which can be caused by medications containing silver, although I don’t know of any relationship to sun exposure.
Methylene blue can turn urine blue/green, apparently, for what that’s worth.
You’re welcome, I’m sure.
Argyria is closely associated with sun exposure; the silver compounds deposited in the skin are colorless until exposed to light (like silver iodide film!).
I just checked the episode on hulu, and the medication was chlorpromazine (sp?), for hyperactivity. In case that helps.
hehe. Chlorpromazine, aka Thorazine. That’ll definitely slow down hyperactivity!
