Odd Feeling

Getting an odd feeling about the " Has any government ever addressed rude behavior by LOCALS"
Dislike foreigners vibe?

I’m not seeing that at all.

The OP (the person not the posting) is a bit of a Midwestern provincial. Nice fellow overall judging from my recollection of his posting history, but not a world traveler himself.

His examples of bad behavior are all foreign. But as he says, he got all that from internet listicles. And yes, the US listicle market itself is real provincial and gets moreso if you hang out even a bit on the right side of the political spectrum.

As the thread has developed others have pointed out the connection to the strength of rule of law. With is highly variable in the USA too.

“That’s no BBQ Pit… That’s Factual Questions! Chewy, turn this thing around…!”

@DaveUnknown: Did you notice this other recent thread from a few days prior? That may have been a trigger for the one you’re concerned about.

I’m sorry I’ve triggered yours (or anyone’s) “this doesn’t feel right” vibes. I have let the community down. I’ll admit that I could have phrased my questions better. And I’ll also admit that building my perceptions of various places via listicles is not best practice.

I have, in fact, travelled here and there. For whatever it’s worth, the only experiences I’ve had where I’ve encountered behavior mentioned in my OP were Paris (unapologetically hostile locals) and Morocco and Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica (extremely aggressive vendors).

Umm, thanks?

And I in turn apologize to you.

I was offering essentially the same defense of you that you did just above and now in that thread. Inviting this OP to “consider the context of the source” so to speak. But I did it very clumsily.

It won’t happen again.

It’s all good. I’d shake your hand and buy you a pint but it’s Sunday morning and we’re miles apart.

Next time I’m planning a return to St. Louis for a few days I’ll give you some warning. I’m sure there’s a watering hole somewhere out along I-70 between there and you where we could meet for a good time and a great yak.

Ha! Just chiming in to back you up on this. I took groups up the falls a few dozen times. The vendors there are (as you say) quite aggressive. They finally figured out I was bringing tour groups, so I was left more alone. However there were always a few… One guy in particular never seemed to remember me. I finally said to him “Hey mon, look pon my face! Me live in Ochie!” He was good after that.

Seeing all this politeness and apologizing and general bon-hommy happening in the Pit actually is a pretty odd feeling.

You’re just pissed because you weren’t f***ing invited!

I read that Japan-tourist thread. My 'pinion is that Japan wants their best shown to the rest of the world, tad censor-y
The LOCALS thing just jumps out, maybe as all-caps, maybe it’s THEY DONT DO THAT WHERE I COME FROM
Caveat I don’t know any of you personally (I claimed that in the first names thread)

Here in Discourse there is no way to embed italics, bold, underline, or bigger in a title. It’s all just plain text and any formatting you attempt will be stripped.

The only way to apply emphasis to a word is by Title Case or ALLCAPS. Some of us write our titles in ordinary “Sentence case like this” and others compose something more like a news headline in Title Case: “Gravity: A Law, or Just a Good Idea?”

I read that title with one word in ALLCAPs as simply calling attention to the one and only unusual word in it. The one signifying he was writing a “man bites dog” OP that could easily be misread as being a “dog bites man” OP unworthy of bothering to read.

YMMV of course.
