Oddly enough, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy doesn't stink

Straight guy here. Caught the one with Butch and nearly died laughing in the first 30 minutes. The Fab 5 was hysterical, especially their horror going through the guy’s wardrobe.

And wow, they’re miracle workers. Especially when dude got his hair cut.

Finally got to see both episodes. How can I get them to come to my house? “Queer Eye for the Slovenly Girl.” I have to agree, Carson’s fashion advice seemed way off in a few places, but then I’m not a gay man, so I wouldn’t know.

The home makeovers were amazing. I’m glad to hear that they actually took 4 days to do - the clean-up alone would take 2 days!

While I really like the “food guy”, I don’t know that it’s an incredibly important aspect of the show. Seems sort of forced, as does the “socialization guy.” They could probably just have the fashion guy, grooming guy, and decorator guy and be just as good.

Does it seem to you all that there are many more specific product placements/plugs in this show than in other makeover/decorating shows? Maybe that’s why they seem to have a higher budget.

Well you know, the gays, we have all the disposable income.

Yeah, I definitely noticed more product placement than what we’d normally see on a show like this. Usually non-sponsors are blurred out. I didn’t notice if there were any acknowledgements in the credits thanking any of the placed products for their support in exchange for a plug (like one sees at the end of game shows). I’ll look for it tonight. My impression was that at least for the grooming parts of it my sweet sweet Kyan was selecting from what was available at the salon where he took the victims. There were definitely different products in each episode.

I don’t have cable either, but you can check out some of the before-and-after photos here.

I watched the show reluctantly today on the suggestion of my mom. I was rather apprehensive, since my mom also loves “Trading Spaces,” “While You Were Out,” and “What Not To Wear,” three shows that I absolutely can not stand. But I had nothing else to do, so I flipped to Bravo.

And you know what? It wasn’t bad.

I liked that the guys were actually nice about the makeover. On “What Not To Wear,” they’re so mean that I just want to punch them. The one episode of that I saw, they were harrassing a 40-something mom who wore theme sweaters. That really rubbed me the wrong way.

On “Queer Eye…” though, everyone’s nice. Granted, there were a few side comments in the latest episode, but, hell, I was tempted to make them! The girlfriend really rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t know why. But there was nothing more than good-natured ribbing on the made-over guy, and there wasn’t even much of that.

Though, IMHO, they totally ruined Tom’s hair! Then again, I go for the street-crazy, Jesus look, so hey…

It’s definitely going to be one I catch regularly. Carson (I think, the blond fashion dude) keeps me in stitches. And I didn’t like the girlfriend either, you could see The Bitch That Is To Come when she went postal over the teddy bear…

I’m glad that our house wasn’t the only one screaming “Get rid of that bitch!” That poor guy! She is definitely not worth it!

This is my new favorite show. Mr. Athena and I both loooove Carson - he has the BEST lines. It’s just so clever and cute!

I do wish, however, that they’d manage to make the guy last night (Tom?) cut his hair. He didn’t seem to be as into the whole makeover thing as Butch was. Butch’s obvious enthusiasm made the show fun - I kept expecting Tom to throw everything out the second the Fab 5 left.

Last night’s episode was the best yet, IMHO. I loved it that the Fab 5 were as catty as my husband and I were towards the bitchy girlfriend. Carson: “I am not related to that woman!”

What the hell did the “manners” guy do? From what I saw it seemed that he went CD shopping on his own while everyone else was working. Odd.

Tom would have looked like a freakin’ model with a short do like Kyan’s. I’m trying to get my husband to cut his hair in that style. Yum…

All they really need is Fashion Guy, Grooming Guy and Interior Design Guy—the rest are too many jimmies on the cupcake (what’s up with a total stranger buying books and music for you?!).

I’m not in on the Carson love: he strikes me as being a shrill nelly who’d not nearly as funny as he thinks he is; but I guess he’s like olives. You either like him or you don’t. I thought he was pawing the poor Straight Guy a little more than was necessary last night, though S.G. was very good-natured about it. Love Grooming Guy and Interior Design Guy, let’s have more of them!

I have just one question: how do I get my husband on the show? He really could use a hand. I did put a stop to the white socks with everything but suits, but, seriously, the man cuts his own hair and only buys new shoes when the old ones don’t keep the pebbles and sand out anymore.

Best lines:

Re: The Girlfriend, “There’s a hooker in Trenton who wants her boots back”

Re: The husband’s gift, “Well, everyone loves a pearl necklace”.

I like the Cooking Guy best, but they’re all fun, though Culture Guy(s) seems pretty expendable.

I think the thing with Ted (Food & Wine Guy) and Jai/Blair (Culture Guys) is that there may be some upcoming episodes where their roles are more important, as well as some episodes where their contributions are in the background. It’ll probably depend on the specific tasks and events the Straight Guys will be trying to pull off.

It seemed to me, that in the first two episodes, Jai/Blair were doing a good bit of grunt work, almost serving as Thom’s (Interior Design Guy) assistant. In last night’s episode, Blair seemed to be serving a bit as the “Idea Guy” – I give him a lot of props for the chalkboard idea. As for him picking out CDs … I’d look at that as a way of recommending music choices to someone for perusal. Blair simply picked stuff out that he feels will help Tom (yesterday’s SG) set the mood for his dinner with the girlfriend. I don’t think Blair meant to permanently change Tom’s musical tastes.

As for the “Food & Wine Guy”, it seems that Ted is solely reponsible for getting the Straight Guys’ kitchens organized, clean, and ready to use. IMHO, a large part of someone’s impression of a home is based on the cleanliness and apparent utility of the kitchen – based on that, I hesitate to downplay Ted’s overall contribution to the show.

After the Teddy Bear Incident, I thought the girlfriend might follow up by peeing in a circle around the house to mark her territory.

I think Culture Guy (Jai/Blair) and Ted (Food Guy) generally help out, in addition to doing what they can in their specialty areas. In fact, it seems like all of the Gay Guys pitch in as necessary when their specialty area isn’t the one in the spotlight. (And I like Ted, so let’s not oust him yet.)

But why is Jai in the credits when Blair’s been in two out of the three episodes? That I don’t get.

Caricci – you can sign up for the show on Bravo’s website. They’re only doing NY-area makeovers at the moment, but since the show seems to be a big ratings success for Bravo, I won’t be surprised to see them branch out. (Come to Seattle! Make over my brother!)

OK, so I didn’t see any thank yous in the credits for the styling products. Just for stuff like the Fab 5’s loft and furniture.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s reacting to the women on the show with a hearty “she is so not worth it!” I loved the bit last ep about how Tom will continue to grow in confidence until he’s ready to dump the GF. Amen and hallelujah to that!

Carson was groping Tom a bit much for my taste as well but Carson has a surprisingly good ass. I wish he’d take some of the length off his hair, though.

Agreed that Culture Guy(s) is sort of amorphous at this point, although he did pick out the pearl earrings in show 2. It is important to learn the social graces, and we saw a good example of that in the first ep where Jai is showing Butch how to work a crowd. I do hope we develop the Culture Guy role a bit because it could be interesting.

And my sweet sweet Kyan with his flattened down hair in the opening segment…sigh. I downloaded all his pictures from Bravo and put them in my screen saver.

I believe NBC is showing reruns of QEftSG after “Will and Grace.” Or at least they’re doing that tonight (Thursday).

When are they going to tackle Fred Phelps?

BTW, Otto. I noticed that Kyan was looking directly at me the other night.

Liar! LIAR!

Did anybody else notice that next week’s S.G. is already a doll before they go to work on him? He must have a house that looks like the SANFORD & SON set in order to qualify for the show.

I just hope that sweeps week will feature Kyan in Speedos. (I wonder if Kyan is his real name; if not, it works.)

Could somebody please remind me, incidentally, the name of the flatbread they used in the first episode to make the pizza? I’d like to try that. (Lagasse?)
