I see the commercials on TV and of course they only show the jets & pilots but I am sure a very small percentage are actually trained to fly .

Keep in mind that given either single-seat or crewed aircraft, you’ve got a whole slew of support troops on the ground: Civil Engineers (near and dear to my heart), Security Forces, Services Troops, Maintainers, Liquid Fuels folks, Supply, etc.

According to the Jan 2002 Airman Magazine which gives a breakdown by AFSC, only around 15,700 actual rated crew including pilots and navigators (not including enlisted aircrew).

So, out of the 295,000 or so, only 15,700 are pilots or “rated”, leaving you with about 6%.
