Off to Bogota! Suggestions?

My GF’s dad lives and works in Bogota, Colombia and invited us down there for a little vacation. Starting Wednesday. We’ve got our passports and are ready for adventure, but I have absolutely no idea what to do while we’re down there. He’ll probably have to work during the days (he’s a geologist with an oil company, so tagging along to the office may be interesting and possible for a day), so we’ll be able to do some exploring. Any suggestions? We’re gonna be there for a week, if there’s anything coming up soon.

My GF is a Spanish major, but I’m guessing there’s a difference between what’s taught at college in the States and what’s spoken in Colombia. Despite living in southern California and Texas all my life, my Spanish is pretty minimal. Any idea how much of an issue that’ll be?

I’m a bit of a chicken shit and have only set foot in Leticia, a sleepy Amazonian jungle town. But, what I really would have loved to do is go to the Museo Botero in Bogota. Sorry, the site is all in Spanish, but the museum is world renown as one of the best modern art museums on the planet. Botero is the artist who painted and sculpted fat people, for a quick crass description.

Emeralds. You can buy them uncut in the street fairs.

Much like Darryl Lict, I’ve been to Leticia and Medellin mostly, but Bogota is a capital city, which means that there’s usually better museums and nightlife.
