Off to Tanzania

I’m off on a business trip and then I’m headed over to Tanzania for a quick visit to the headquarters of the Hero Rats organization which I’m helping support.

I’m excited, this is a first time to visit Africa, and I’ll get a chance to visit a wildlife park as well.

This should be fun. I’ll get to see how the rats are trained and will talk to the director of the project on how to raise funds. This is a volunteer activity for me. I’ve talked to a number of people here in Japan, both Japanese and not, and there’s some interest in helping.

I’ll post some pics when I’m back.

We (my family) just arrived back from Tanzania last Thursday. We were there for pleasure, and found it. We met only nice people while there. Enjoy!

I recall seeing the hero rats on an episode of The Amazing Race. Fascinating!

Cool! You’ll love Tanzania and her people. You’ve inspired me to make a donation to the Hero Rats!

You da man. Be sure to take those malaria pills. When I was visiting Doha for my pre-employment visit, one of the employees there had gone to Tanzania with a couple of friends. They had delayed starting their anti-malarials, and when I got to Doha, one had tested positive for malaria, and the other was sick as a dog and refusing to get tested. You can’t avoid the mosquitos; your only recourse is to take your meds like you’re supposed to. (Or that was the message I got.)

Quick word about the malaria meds…you can still get malaria even when taking the meds and malaria is treatable (but not fun).

We took Malarone (daily) and were fine. We may still have malaria, but it hasn’t shown up yet. We didn’t experience as many mosquitos as we expected.

My wifes parents took Mefloquine (weekly) and have had a bad reaction. Her mom was nauseated and retched but never really vomitted. Her dad experienced numbness in his hands. Both of them went to the hospital when they returned. Her mom is still having the vivid dreams (she swears that she is awake when they are happening despite the trippy stuff in her dream). Read the packaging carefully before you leave.

Thanks for the advice. I’m in Singapore today and then head off on Friday.

We’ll see how malaria goes!
