What are the perks? Is there anything aside from no ads? I am very happy with posting for free. It doesn’t make my posts any more interesting, but with ad blocking turned on I feel like I am putting it to the Man. or Woman. Then I turn ad blocking off when I read a really good post. (Any post by Omni, or any post by that hot chick with no morals who can email me now - you know who you are!)
After that post, if you turned off ad blocking, you might get ads from hot chicks with no morals.
However, without ad blocking, I wouldn’t be here.
Okay, so I’m still a little confused. (I’m in love, okay? These days “Confused” is the least of it!!!)
Anyway, I really don’t mind the ads and I’ve called on the kindness of fellow Dopers more than enough. If I don’t pay up, do I lose my CM? What happened to the Board going free? Isn’t the payment just to kill the ads etc?
Can I run a tab?
Scissorjack, cut it out. Your posts in this thread are borderline threadshitting.

How much to get an Administrator title?
I’ll sell you mine. Let’s talk offline.
I joined this board in December of 07. At that time the board was pay to post. I gladly paid the 15 bucks and felt it was way worth it.
When the time came to renew, the board had changed to free posting.
I was planning on renewing my membership but tptb were saying that they didn’t want our money. They were going to make more money on advertisements than memberships.
So, I didn’t renew.
I am not now nor have I ever been a Charter Member. I would however, be a paying member today if it wasn’t discouraged.
I believe what you’re saying was the sentiment at the time. I believe it no longer holds true, as the SDMB is not making as much money off ads as it expected.
I encourage you, and anyone else who wishes to support the SDMB, to subscribe.
Thanks.

Yeah, but what actually happens if you don’t pay up and you’re already a CM?
I’m guessing nothing? You pay your $7.50 or whatever it is like usual, and you stay a Charter Member. This is about lapsed CMs, not those of us who managed to hold onto our title.
What Cat Whisperer said. There is no change to existing Charter Members. If you don’t renew your Charter Member subscription at the $7.48 rate, you will lose your Charter Member status. If you renew it in time, you will continue to be a Charter Member at the $7.48 per year rate.
For the convenience of existing Charter Members renewing around now (and I see a significant spike since the posting of this thread), I’ve added a 2 year renewal option for $14.95 if you wish to pay for 2 years up front. So you could either renew for 1 year at $7.48 or for 2 years at 14.95.

A fool and their money are soon parted.
I like this, but I think it should go further. If I can buy my way into a charter member title, I really should be able to opt out of it while still getting the hidden benefits. That is, I would like to give up my charter member title, but still retain my “continuous subscriber” discount. This would allow those of us who still support the sdmb because of a naive hope that it’s not really going down the tubes to give our support without advertising to the world that we’re kind of dumb.
I am only half serious.
I don’t see any demand for this feature.
However, if you’re serious, I could easily set your title to Member without removing you from the Charter Member subscription group.
This makes more sense if you’re a Custom Title member and prefer not to have Charter Member show under your custom title. If anyone wants this done, please PM me.

Some people are never happy. The people who run the board have made something happen- there is always a cost for achieving that. You can pay and get your status back. What is the big deal?
Great idea! This is what this board is all about!
You know, I think they should have. Not only would he have done a very good job, as he apparently is a very talented network administrator, but he would also have been pissed, since there’s no way he’d have ever made this offer if he’d thought there was any chance they’d take him up on it. So a two-fer, really.
I find it strange that people can post to say that this is a waste of money.
Perhaps I am bad with figures, but for those who had every intention of renewing their subscriptions for the forseeable future anyway, it actually COSTS THEM NOTHING.
They would have paid $30 over the next two years. Now they will pay $30 over the next two years, and get their charter status back. Win win.
"Thirty dollars for one extra word" indeed.
As to those who felt the need to drop in here and let us know that they think paying for this is stupid and that they wouldn’t be doing it. Well done. Have an internet cookie.
As a final point, I am once again very impressed with Xash as an administrator of this board. I believe he has an excellent attitude to interacting with posters on this board, an attitude others could learn from.
It is my honest opinion that accepting that offer would have been a big mistake in the long term.
Personality issues would have ensured things would not end well.
Just my opinion.
