It’s funny, I had to go back and read the after thread to realize I had the wrong year. Not to mentio calling out the “other” message board.
The memories I have are vague. But mostly good.
We weren’t allowed to keep recordings, or even written notes, during the meeting, so I may be recalling wrong, but the pricelist I remember was $20 million (in gold, no paper cash allowed) for CM, and something like $20 billion (same actual gold, no paper) if you wanted Cecil’s “Perfect Master” title. But that meeting never happened, so I’m just making up bullshit, here… 
When I lost my Charter Member title last year when my life was kinda busy, I was mildly annoyed, but I certainly was able to live without it.
Still, I would kinda like my CM title back. As meaningless as it is, I kinda liked having it under my username.
And without a doubt, this place has been worth *far *more to me over the years than $30 plus a few years’ worth of $7.49 payments. I may grouse about particular aspects of how this place is run, but I wouldn’t have been hanging out here for the past eleven years (Eleven years?! Has it really been that long?? How time flies when someone is wrong on the Internet!) if I hadn’t enjoyed the experience, by and large.
So I think I’ll be joining the group of people asking for instructions on how to fork over their thirty bucks.
Maybe this thread should be stickied for as long as the offer is valid.

I let my subscription lapse last year for 2 days under similar circumstances. Lapsed May 21, 2009. Renewed May 23, 2009. Lost “Charter” status. Who cares? Please read aforementioned quote.
I’ve been reading the Straight Dope since the first print book came out in the late 80s (in my recollection - right after the Gutenberg “B42” Bible was published). Message board or not, helping Uncle Cecil’s mission to eradicate ignorance seems worth a sawbuck or three.
I don’t post on the board very often (if at all, in recent history), but after reading a bit of this thread…weighing the arguments one way or another…my decision to re-up my subsription to regain “Charter” status was one of the easier ones I made today.
