Hi everyone. Like most of the planet, I’ve been working from home since March of this year. When the UK lockdown started, I found myself needing an office chair very quickly, and bought the first one I could find from a company that was delivering quickly - a fairly cheap and low quality affair.
Predictably, after several months of hard use, it’s in pretty bad shape, and I’d like to replace it before it breaks completely, with something that will last. I’m a fairly heavy chap (somewhere in the region of 266lbs) so I probably need something very robust; I see “bariatric office chairs” are a thing, but they seem to be rated for people even bigger than I.
I’ll be spending a lot of time sitting in it - I’m at my desk for a full working day, and often for several hours in the evening and at weekends, since many of my hobbies also involve sitting at a computer. So really, this is a general call for advice - what’s good in the world of office chairs, particularly for the, er, heftier user? I’m not too bothered about what it looks like as long as it’s ergonomically sound. I’d be willing to spend up to maybe £300 on it.
There was just a thread last week with a lot of information in it about buying chairs. You should probably check that out.
As far as the specific recommendation goes I’m both big and tall and I found that a good gaming chair has been amazing. Gaming chairs in general are designed to be sat on for hours at a time and you still remain comfortable.
Mine is from Secret Lab, I’ve had it for three years now, with zero complaints or issues. They make a variety of chairs to suit your individual height and weight.
Below is the Canadian website, I don’t know the prices in UK. I think they’re originally from Singapore but are now pretty global so I’m sure they have a UK website with pricing as well.
Thanks @GMANCANADA - I must have missed the recent thread! I’ll direct any further questions and comment to that one, since it’s asking a very similar question.
This is the chair I use at work – I ordered it because I keep breaking chairs. It was cheap and has held up well.
That said, if I could convince management to buy one of the steelcase leap plus chairs that would be the way I would go. I’m too cheap to buy it for myself.
I had to replace my home office chair when I started teleworking full-time. I’m a woman and only 5’3, but I weigh ~240lbs and wanted something comfortable and sturdy. Here’s what I wound up getting:
I’ve had it for almost 8 months now: it’s slightly oversized for my height, but I really love it. I can sit cross-legged in it, or with one leg tucked, which is really nice.
