- I want to make a Word/text document that has numeric figures in it.
1.) I want the numerical figures in the text doc linked to cells in the spreadsheet so that when both files are open in their respective programs, the numerical figures in the Word/text doc are updated when the spreadsheet is changed.
2.) I have Office 2K Pro, student license.
3.) I can import a whole spreadsheet by inserting an object, but I don’t want to do that. I don’t want a whole spreadsheet, I just want the numbers (the contents of a single cell), font-formattable and looking like a perfectly normal Word document. No spreadsheet boxes or scrollbars: the resulting text document needs to look normal.
…
Alternately if Word/Excel cannot do this, anybody know if OpenOffice or StarOffice can? Where I work is 100% MS, but I can get them to install something just for this feature, as it would save major time.

- Okay, I’m back. Update:
1.) I cannot get Word and Excel to use any sort of active link, except to an entire Excel workbook. That is, whenever the workbook updates, all the links in the word document link to the entire active sheet in the workbook. I cannot find any way to “hold” the link to just one cell on one sheet, and keep the link active.
I am fairly stunned.
I can’t help but think I’m missing something here.
…
2.) OpenOffice and StarOffice can both do it, using DDE links (but not OLE links). -Which is a heck of a lot better than nothing, but still. The DDE links are copied form a single cell on a single sheet, and stay there, and do update. The problem with DDE links is that in both these programs they have to appear in their own separate line on the text document. Text will not wrap to either side of them, and you cannot place them inside a cell of another table.

Maybe this will help.
Actually, I just tried it with OfficeXP and it’s even simpler (this worked for me):
- select the source cell in your Excel worksheet
- Edit | Copy
- in Word, select Edit | “Paste Special”
- select “Formatted Text (RTF)” or “Unformatted text” depending what you want to do
- make sure “Paste Link” is selected
Voila…when the value is updated in Excel, the value in word should reflect it.
Does this work in Office 2K?
