"Official camera of the Internet?"

Pentax claims on their TV commercial that their Optio camera is the “official camera of the Internet”. Who or what authorizes them to make this claim? Can I make the same type of claim for another camera or other product I’d like to promote?

I can understand claims for the Official this or that of DisneyLand, or the Olympics because someone owns that service or trademark. But the Internet?

Their news section as much as admits to simply creating the idea out of thin air:

I assume that if you so desired, you could be the “Official GaryM of the internet”.

I looked at your link and see that they have it trademarked, or at least they display the “tm” symbol. So I guess it’s OK because they thought of it first.

I guess I could use “the Official GaryM of the Internet” as a sig.

It only means that Pentax trademarked the phrase first. Someone else could have thought of it, but didn’t fill out the paperwork.

It’s just an advertising slogan.

I almost posted the same question but came to the same conclusion after reading Pentax’s website. Incredible arrogance IMHO.

Yes, but it’s the Official Arrogance of the Digital Imaging World[sup]SM[/sup].
