I wonder, as poor Ivan must be too, if there really is any poison and antidote. It’s not the first time he’s been tricked into this act. Also, the queen doesn’t seem to be a part of the joke this time. She might not like the ambassador messing with Ivan without her permission, especially if there’s really poison at stake. It would be funny if she switched the antidote with real poison so that the ambassador killed himself and Ivan only lived by refusing to perform. That would really mess with Ivans head.

I have a feeling that even if he “wins,” this will end with humiliation for Ivan.

And I think he’s right about Mistress being pissed were he to be killed without her permission.

The guy tells the other guy how things came to be, in the manner of Kipling’s ‘Just So’ stories – fanciful, but scientifically incorrect explanations. The other guy is incensed by the guy’s stupidity, so he stabs him. The guy goes home and claims he’s been stabbed. The woman assumes that he hasn’t been stabbed, but that he is telling her how belly buttons came to be. And she’s heard it before.
I had completely forgotten the ‘Just-So’ stories until this comic. Here’s a link to an online version of the book if you enjoy the style. My favorite is The Cat That Walked By Himself. Even though I’m a dog person, cats come off as pretty bad ass in the story. I also like imagining the man and woman as cavemen ala History of the World: Part 1
I think he’s a total psycho. And that’s why he’s survived being an ambassador to Mistress for so long. She likes having him around, because he always comes up with entertaining things to do. Well, except for poisoning Ivan.
And I think that Mistress is a total psycho as well. She’s got the intelligence and power and authority to be able to enforce her wishes, which is part of why she’s so scary.
Duh. Ivan is Mistress’ personal toy (one of many). If he got killed off, she’d make sure to raise him, and then kill him again, more painfully this time, because he’s supposed to make sure that he stays available for her pleasure. She might or might not vent her displeasure on whoever killed Ivan, too.
I used to read the Just So stories to my daughter, and made up some myself. It’s pretty gratifying to have her tell me that she remembers my stories, and she still loves them.
And we liked The Cat best, too.

Reminds me of just why I love this comic so much. It’s not just the main arcs (although those are great too), but the one-offs that remind us of just how twisted a world with real magic in it would be.
Is this the first time they’ve included a link for merchandise? There are only a couple of things available, but hopefully they’ll add more stuff. A cumsprite plush would just be so, so wrong. : )
