OGRE! (Don Gibb) is dead

Don Gibb, who memorably played Ogre in Revenge of the Nerds, has died.

He was great as one of the heroes of that movie, battling the evil, sex crime committing, rapey nerds. Unfortunately and poignantly, just as Rocky himself in the first Rocky movie, he and the rest of the Alpha Betas ultimately fell just short of victory against them.

He was also Ray Jackson in Bloodsport, and a bartender in an X-Files episode, but he’ll always be Ogre to me.

(I am sure he’s done many other things, but those three things are always what come to mind …)

Alright, I will admit it. I am a total nerd. Although not the type of nerd in the context of this thread.

When I read the title of the thread, I thought maybe Steve Jackson who invented the OGRE giant robot tank game, had died.

I will admit I knew him more from Bloodsport than Nerds.

Having grown up in Austin in the 70s/80s, I share your nerdy love for OGRE and Car Wars and especially his Melee RPG system, which we always preferred to D&D.

I will say that Ray Jackson (and his bandana) was a wonderful character. RIP

My first thought was the Ogre game too! Glad I’m not alone.

I think it is because the OP wrote OGRE in the title instead of Ogre. If I see it in all caps I always think of the board game first. In low caps I probably think of DnD first and the nerd’s character after that.

Came here wondering if someone had figured out a good way to deal with the PanEuropean Fencer; was only mildly disappointed.

I was thinking about the scene early in the film when Ogre comes into a frat party with a football trophy full of beer, and someone yells, “Ogre!!!”. Seemed like it should have been in caps.

Oh absolutely! I don’t think you did anything wrong, as that makes total sense. I would even say there are almost certainly way more people who know the movie character than the board game.

I just got a certain thrill out of describing myself as a nerd but not THAT kind of nerd in a thread about Revenge of the Nerds.
