Wal Mart has notified the city council that it will be building a Super center in our town
of 8000 people.
The only hardware store around , there used to be 3 and two more within 10 minutes , has
said they will have to close. The farm store is already suffering and my guess is they will
close too.
The new store will include a grocery store which will most certainly cause at least one of
the 3 we have in town to close and certainly hurt the other 2.
We had a JC Penny store and Wards and Sears had catalog stores. All closed. The 2 mens
stores are long closed as are the 2 womens stores.
The store will also include a gas station sometime in the future.
This is Progress??
This town has not grown in the last several years. Many of the factory buisnesses have
grown but people drive in from neighboring communities. There are new houses going
up but the old ones aren’t selling.
We have a brand new 4 lane freeway going through and another is slated to go through
soon. They are paving 15 miles away.
How is this progress?
I see where the city council OKed Wal Marts request for a zoning change.
Oh yeah we also have a Wal Mart distribution center in town.
You need to read a book called “The Store” by John Steakly. Its a sleazy shock horror book, but it is based upon the exact situation that your town is in. Without spoiling it, the “Store” (a national chain exactly like Wal-Mart) moves into town, businesses start closing, pretty soon everyone works for the Store and the store starts selling Dildos and Dynamite. Lots of people getting laid in the aisles and crazy shit like that.
Actually a pretty entertaining read if you shut your brain off for a day or two.
8000 people and they get a Super-Walmart? Wow.
We’ve got 45K and just have a plain, jane regular department store one.
Color me jealous!
Not to make light of the unfortunate situation with respect to small businesses in your town, but…
RESISTANCE IS FUTILE. WALMART CANNOT BE CONTROLLED. WALMART CANNOT BE CONTAINED. SUBMIT. SUBMIT!!!
Say what you want…they put a “super Walmart” two miles from my house and I was not all that excited about it.
However, the prices are amazing and there is a large selection. I go there a lot, but not exclusively.
However, avoid their gas station! My car started acting up and when I took it to the garage the first words out of the mechanics mouth was, “did you get it filled at Walmart this week?”
There was no way he could have known that. Then I found out I was about the 16th car of the day…seems it was water-ed down gas or something…
By the way, the local grocery stores and other shops did not go out of business and suddenly their prices came back down to earth.
I am not a big Walmart fan, but I notice unions and everyone always get pissed off when a CHEAPER chain store comes into town, but who’s bitchin’ when a new 7-11 store opens selling potato chips for $5.00 a bag?
