The portion of the NDA which I’m talking about is the one where industry people are excluded from discussing any of the technologies before it hits SU. I’m surprised someone called MacTech would be unaware of the repercussions for doing so, regardless of how close it is to the SU.
FYI, the latest seed was 8A428 - last week - whether that was GM or not there’s no way I could’ve discussed what was on it and expected to not catch an incredible amount of hell. Hence the flabbergasted…ness.
allright then, just to be on the safe side, lets nuke the thread from orbit, the only way to be sure
we had lots of people calling in trying to buy it early, but it’s NOT AVAILABLE until 6 PM tomorrow, got a problem with that, talk to Apple, the OS does not officially exist until 6 PM tomorrow
I can only imagine the hell that could come from this thread!
“Mr. Tech, did you or did you not go onto the internet and proclaim that the new Mac OS X is, and I quote, ‘freakin’ sweet?’ A full two days before the OS was released to the general public? And did you not, in this same discussion, list features specific to the new OS that have been described and demonstrated in text and videos on Apple’s website for a month before its release? Are you not, in fact, doing free advertising for the Apple corporation?”
I’m as anal-retentive about NDAs as you can be without actually being a lawyer, and I can’t see how anyone could be “flabbergasted” by anything said in this thread. No offense to MacTech, but there’s not a single thing he’s said in any of his posts that I hadn’t already seen on Apple’s own website.
Thats sorta what I had to do , except it was set up the hp on XP and then have mandrake look for the printer on the XP box , it was easier to have the puter running mandrake host the printer and have windows find it easily enough.
OK, folks… here is the stuff I’m asking about. Or rather, that’s the underpinnings. On reading it you can easily see how it would logically lead to far more granular control over file sharing. What I was asking was to what extent is this implemented in Tiger? (It looks like the architecture is in place but if I read this correctly the widgets for setting up this granular control haven’t made it to the GUI yet? Is that correct?) Looks like an account will continue to be necessary for any fileshare client, but the rest of what I’m looking for / hoping for looks very possible
Well, there are lots of things to love about Tiger (installed it last night, painless except for having to download some updates to Safari plugins) but for some reason the dictionary is making me very happy.
Wow. I don’t know what to be more impressed with, Dictionary or Spotlight. Or Dashboard.
Okay, it’s Spotlight. Searching this quickly and deeply is just freakin’ amazing.
There’s a new PithHelmet out for Safari RSS.
Oh, look! It’s 76º and sunny in Webster, Texas. :smack: Would somebody at Accu-Weather get a window, or a clock? At least Weatherpop still works .
Wish I could copy and paste from/into the translator widget.
Many interesting and underadvertised features of Tiger can be found in this lengthy thread at the MacNN forums. (They certainly are a well-informed but fractious bunch over there )
I finally got and installed Tiger last night. I’m not blown away by it yet, but it’s already got enough improvements so far that I think it was worth it.
One nice thing is that everything except iTunes (damn DRM issues) has improvements that make it pretty easy to transfer files from one machine to another. Getting the new machine in sync with my Powerbook has been less painless than I’d expected.
And as for the Safari thing and link underlining: turns out that I am an idiot, as many have suspected all along. They give you the option under “Advanced” to use a master style sheet for everything; I can’t explain why it never occurred to me that that’s exactly what it’s for. Just a simple two-line text file:
A { text-decoration: none; }
A:hover { text-decoration: underline; }
Use that as your stylesheet in Safari, and it’s as simple as that.
And oh yeah. Here’s a pisser: the video card that ships with the Mac mini only has 32MB video memory (how did I miss that in the spec?), so I don’t get to see all the new gee-whiz stuff. Like the ripple effect when you drop a widget on the dashboard.
