Sorry. My best one that I recall is the fact that I was using Ctrl-Alt-Del to call up task manager on my computer and then using that to lock my computer at work for 9 years before I learned I could hit the “microsoft flag” key and L at the same time to lock it. :smack:
Not real exciting. I’ll see what else I can think of.
In a lot of newer laptops, the touchpad also has “two finger scrolling.” Rather than using the edge of the touchpad, just put two fingers down, slightly apart so it can sense it’s two fingers and not one large one, and move them up/down.
Related to that:
In Vista or Win 7, hitting CTRL+SHIFT+ESC brings up the task manager directly, rather than having to do CTRL+ALT+DEL and then clicking task manager in the menu thingy that comes up.
If I can add a piece of technology that I still don’t know the function of:
I have a 2003 Corolla S. To the left of the steering wheel on the dash is what looks like a small red light. I say looks like because I have never seen it light up for any reason. It’s on the front of the dash, just to the right of the little plastic coin holder (I’m not going to tell you how long it took me to figure out that was a coin holder…or that it wasn’t even me who figured it out.)
And before people respond with what they think it is, I will tell you it’s NOT the anti-theft light. That light is on top of the dash right next to the windshield, and I see it flash all the time when the car is locked and whatnot. So what the heck is it?
Like many other Mac owners, I had at first thought that my keyboard’s “eject” button wasn’t working. I’d tap it, like any other key, and nothing would happen. Then I accidentally discovered that if I hold the key down for about 1 second, it works just fine. I understand the reason for this (you don’t want disks ejecting if you accidentally tap the button), but I wish someone had told me sooner.
Good luck with that. I have a 2008 Honda CR-V that has a little blue light in the headliner, right above the rear view mirror. No idea what it is for, it’s just a tiny blue light that is always on. Well, always on at night that I know of. It could be on during the day but I never notice it then.
My Acura has similar dash lights, when I was test driving the car, the dealer mentioned them as a little extra light to see the radio/AC/etc dials without messing up night vision.

That’s the point. It’s supposed to let you know when your headlights should be on. If you can see the light, it’s dark enough.
I sincerely hope you don’t live in Florida. When driving around and folks start turning on their hazard lights in a storm, then dropping down to 20mph when it isn’t needed*, I roll my eyes and try to get around them. For the reasons listed in the link, it’s a lot more dangerous to put on your hazard lights than to turn on your headlights and signal carefully before considering any lane changes while driving through a storm. It’s almost always those who have no idea how to drive in rainy conditions that cause accidents and cause traffic to go to a standstill down here. Thing is, it rains almost every day for several months, so learning to drive in the rain is something one needs to do in Florida.
*Sorry, but in the areas where I’m driving, you can drive a car safely in light to moderate rain conditions up to 40mph as long as there’s no flooding.
My :smack: moment was when Acid Lamp’s iphone started going on the fritz the other day; instead of looking to get it repaired, we could just reset it to factory settings, then reload the apps and such on the phone. I would have never thought of it, and was thinking of how much it’d suck to have to buy a new phone while driving home. I’m, uh, liking this “smartphone” thing where I can treat it like it’s a little computer and be able to fix some of the “problems” on my own.
I went out to the car one day in the summer a few years ago and went to turn on my new iPod. The screen was full of wavy psychedelic colors. Damn! They warned me not to leave those things in a car on a sunny day. I fried my screen!
That night, when I got in to drive home, the screen was fine. Hmmm. Maybe it was a temporary thing. Leaving it in the hot car didn’t destroy it!
This happened three more times. The third time, I decided to put the iPod away in my bag and take it in the house. I couldn’t see in the bag with my sunglasses on. I took them off and the screen was fine. Put them back on - wavy psychedelic colors.
Something like that happened to my dad. For years he bemoaned the fact that when he turned his camera sideways to take a photo, the previewscreen would go dark. Finally one of his camping buddies suggested that he take his sunglasses off before snapping the photo.
No shit… I’m going to have to try to remember to try this one out in my '04 GMC. Not that I really need it; I only ever use 5 of the buttons here in town, anyway, but it’d be nice to know about, I guess.
I found out about it because the radios were made in Kokomo, near here, and I played pool with a guy who worked there. It was a feature the divisions didn’t consider important enough to tell the owners about.
I have it on good authority that on his first day as Admin, Marley23 wondered what pressing a giant glowing amber button with this cryptic marking would do:

No, I live in New England where, oddly enough, people cannot see my head lights from the rear.
The kind of rains I am talking about - and I know you must have them in Florida - is rain so heavy you can hear the difference when driving under a road sign, just like when you drive under a bridge.
I have 12 pre-sets, and 4 are for 'NPR stations - I’m going to see if I can set up a few more.
I had bought a Murano in 2006, and my friend bought the newer model about a year later. He said it’s nice to have a car with heated seats, and I said that unfortunately I bought the basic model which didn’t come with that option. He said yes it does. I said no it doesn’t. He said I’m pretty sure it does… he was right, which was really embarrassing because the buttons for the heated seats are in a prominent position in the middle console. And the worst thing was that I had gone through a complete Edmonton winter without using them 'cause of my dumbness :smack:
I managed to redeem myself in a small way by knowing an arcane function: Nissan owners (and maybe other cars as well) try this…
If you unlock your car with the key fob, keep holding the unlock button down - what will happen?
Whenever we go anywhere together in my wife’s '03 minivan, she drives. For years, the only time I drove the van was when she was out of town.
Earlier this year she was tired and asked me to drive. She asked me to turn on the radio, so I pushed the button on the steering wheel and, jokingly, said, “Radio, on”. Then I pushed another button and said, “Channel, up”.
I was about to raise the volume the same way, when she asked, “How are you doing that?”
After pointing out the buttons that had been at her fingertips for 8 years, she asked me about the ones on the other side of the wheel, labeled, “CC”.
In fairness, I only recently realized that the touchpad on her Mac wasn’t defective after all. The right margin is supposed to move you up or down the page.
When I got into my office this morning, I noticed that I had two lightbulbs burned out. I could still work, but I didn’t like how dim it was. I called Engineering to come and replace the bulbs. The came in…
