Oh, the smells of remodeling--what is the source?

Oh, I don’t mean the paint. It dissipates. I mean the odors that come up when you start tearing out very old carpet and the even older flooring beneath it. It doesn’t matter how long you leave the windows open; it’s still there. Not unbearable, but definitely unpleasant. What is it? And is there any way to mitigate it?

Everything that’s ever spilled on your carpet?

In my kitchen it was the cat piss on the carpet that was in between two layer of vinyl flooring. I came close to vomiting during that removal. I have no idea how long that had been fermenting trapped there.

I noticed on carpeted floors that the smell of the broken down foam rubber pad still lingers. Is that what you refer to?

It’s very old carpeting and very old flooring. No mold that I can see. Never flooded. Never steam-cleaned.
