Oh, what movie is this?

Something about a young Russian woman (a girl, really) who winds up alone in a big city and has to look out for herself. She winds up becoming a prostitute, I think. She has a little mantra she repeats to herself every night before going to sleep, something like: “I’ll be all right. I’ll be all right.”

Roger Ebert liked it.

Was it Rochelle, Rochelle?

I think it was Rio by Duran Duran.

No, it can’t be that one. Her journey was from Milan to Minsk.

:stuck_out_tongue: Thanks for making me laugh!

It sounds like your movie is Lilja 4-ever. Great film, but very wrenching to watch. It spirals down and down and down until…well, let’s just say, it ain’t a happy ending, so you know Julia Roberts isn’t playing the title character.

I often disagree with Ebert, but I gotta stand by him on this one. Just don’t watch it if you’re feeling hopeless. It’s a good pair up with Ken Loach’s Sweet Sixteen or Lynne Ramsay’s Ratcatcher.

Yes, I do watch way too many movies. Now, be quiet. I hate it when people are talking during the film.

ding ding ding ding That’s it!

Good goin’, Stranger! Thank you!

We aim for peas.

Have you seen the film?

If you really want a downer about an Eastern European whore, check out Mandragora. That movie would have Tony Robbins out on a ledge having to be talked down.

And after you’re done with that, check out two of director Lukas Moodysson’s other films, both better, IMHO, than L4E but also incredibly warm, funny, and touching without ever being sentimental: Together and Show Me Love.

No, but I’d like to! Does sound sad, though.

[aside] Netflix doesn’t know when they’ll have it. What does that mean, anyway? Do they carry it or not? [/aside]

Sampiro, “Mandragora” was an episode of Doctor Who, wasn’t it?

I believe Netflix only carries Region 1 discs; this film has apparently not been released to DVD in R1 yet.
