Oh yeah, there's Olympic Figure Skating tonight!

Yes, but you guys missed the Best.Costume.Evar.

Extremely cool…I’m surprised nobody’s started a facebook fan page for it yet!

It would have been a better use of his time!

Actually, I found out that he was cleaning the hamster’s cage. Fun. He has the whole house to himself while I’m engrossed in snowboarding and figure skating… and he cleans the hamster’s cage. I have to give him kudos for being productive, though.

Did they do away with the school figures in figure skating or just stop televising them?

I’m going to add for your consideration the creepy clown costumes worn by the German pair in the short program. I’m still having nightmares…

Got rid of them a few Olympics ago. Strictly speaking, that means there is no figure skating in figure skating!

They did away with the school figures as part of the competion in 1990. Mainly because they were so boring that they were never shown on TV, yet they made up a substantial part of the final score.

I don’t mind it that much, and I’m male. My wife is really into it and she patiently sits by when I have tennis on. Truthfully, I have to admit I get a little interested when it is on.

I get rather childish when it is on, though. Mostly, I make extremely childish and inappropriate jokes about the “faaabulous” costumes the men are wearing.

I don’t know what it is about men figure skating, but it returns me to my immature middle school age where I couldn’t help but giggle and make “gay” jokes.

And yes, I am ashamed and apologies all around.

Are there any male costumes that are manly? My wife said Todd Eldridge dressed reasonably in his day. Johnny Weir, on the other hand…, well…, uh…, :snicker:.

Skeleton costume=awesome.
Clown costumes=wtf, man?

That’s part of international figure skating that amuses me to no end - they do such weird, kitschy, spangled things that are somehow okay because, hey, figure skating!

Go go Shen and Zhao!

The pairs event was exactly what people talk about when they say figure skating’s exciting! A married couple coming out of retirement, at their age, to beat the world and end Russia’s 46 years of dominance in the sport. You couldn’t write it better than that! Add to that fact there was no judging controversy; the two 2 teams had no falls at all unlike everyone else.

As a straight guy who likes to watch figure skating, I can point to that night and silence the critics, or at least make them less noisy because I’m too busy humming the tune the gold medal pair skated to. It was a great night for skating, and it was even fun to see David Pelltier and Jaime Sale again. She still looks as hot as ever!

Yevgeny Plushenko is still in his 20’s. that means I’ve been watching him for 10 years! He came out of retirement to be in this Olympics and is still kicking everyone else’s butt! Though he’s aging a bit oddly, he had a beautiful costume in his short program last night, not gaudy at all.

That was great. I especially liked Besic’s gasp when poor Shen fell out of a lift. But they rocked the short program so kudos to them. They have such artistry that it is a joy to watch them.

Hey Scott Hamilton we ALL know you were the last man to win the Olympic gold medal while being world champion the previous year. That’s great.

But those of us who know skating also know that you screwed up the long program and won largely on the strength of your school figures. I adore you but you did not have a good program that night.

But that’s the best part. Seriously, the costumes are SO much fun to make fun of…
Surly, I clicked on your link but got nothing.
Did they do an imiaitation of It?

Thanks to you and D18 both.

That was the main part of figure skating that I did watch all the way through. At least there I understood the goal and scores and all. Too often in skating I watch all the programs and come up with a totally different “set of winners” than the judges do.

Huh. I still get the picture of them when I click on it. Do a google image search for SAVCHENKO SZOLKOWY clown and you’ll get pictures. They skated to “Send in the Clowns” and were appropriately dressed. It was very creepy!

I thought it was kind of nice. I liked when they linked feet. And I thought the little smudge of lipstick on the girl’s nose afterwards was cute.

Broken skate lace on the Japanese men’s skate (Oda, I think his name is)! What a terrible way to lose points! They showed a close-up of his skates, and they are all scuffed and old looking, which seemed really odd until I realized he was doing a Charlie Chaplin little tramp routing - maybe the beat-up old skates were to look trampy. Other than falling because his lace snapped, he had a very good program. Man, I’d be kicking myself over that (after taking my skates off).

ETA: Ranked 3rd at this point - the costume malfunction could cost him a medal.

I was just going to ask if Johnny Weir jumps backwards when the announcer said he does. He jumps clockwise where most skaters jump counter-clockwise - that’s why his jumps kept looking backwards to me. I wonder if his dominant foot is the opposite of most skaters.

Is this happening right now? All I’m getting on my tv is hockey, curling and skiing.

It’s on for me now, but I’m watching CTV, a Canadian national network.

Lysacek, Plushenko, Takahashi are the final standings. Lysacek did have the skate of his life; Plushenko did not. Takahashi fell so hard it looked like he bruised. Canada’s great hope, Patrick Chan, came in fifth. Oh well.

And having checked time zones, I see you guys are an hour ahead of where I am. I thought Calgary was further west; I’ll see myself out now.
