Well the Guardian has removed the story from the site and it did not appear in the print edition so I guess they realised it was a wrong interpretation of his words. They picked it up from the German paper which i suppose is where the spin was applied if as someone said the translations match.

Point of order - this statement is utterly incorrect. In point of fact, “the ends justify the means” is shorthand for the position that, if you have a morally proper goal, any means to achieve that goal are acceptable. Quite frankly, if this proposition were “devoid of any morality,” then the person acting would not wish to achieve the goal in the first place.
You (and I) may believe that this is an improper moral code, but that does not mean that it is devoid of any morality.
