Ok Dopers, help me run away from home.

I’ll knock that one on the head! Average house price is US$1m, prices for everyday stuff make me wince (and I’m familiar with London), and even British citizens can struggle to get work permits.

I wonder if I could drive all the way to Belize. It’s not like I’m in a huge hurry or anything…

FWIW - I plan on getting a 66 Chevelle to make the, just 'cus it’s obnoxious. And so am I. wOOt!

Oh, come on! You’re in Canada! Where the men are men and the sheep are bored!

I’d say Costa Rica before Belize. Belize can be a bit scarey and does have a pretty high crime rate.

People might think I’m crazy too, but I loved Roatan. I think it’s pretty inexpensive.

Nah - Canadian men aren’t into me. I think my boobs are too big or something.

Tell 'em you’re a moose. They love mooses.

You could try Hawaii, but it can get a little spendy.

You couldn’t find much better surfing. Hell, there are surfers that live in the weeds just across the road from some of the North Shore beaches.

The diving is great.

I leave for Hawaii this coming Saturday. I’ll ask around some beach bums and see if they’re interested in having a big-breasted Canadian chick with a couple of hundred grand come to visit.

For Meixico have a look see [url=http://www.aarpmagazine.org/travel/Articles/a2004-01-21-mag-mexico.html]here[/url. I ran across this a few years ago after seeing something about it on the Travel Channel.

ARGGHH!!! here

May I suggest you hire a manservant?
Namely me?

I, too, would look at Costa Rica. No first-hand knowledge, but the father of one of my best friends has been living there for over 20 years. One caveat I did hear a few years ago is that it is not as cheap as in 1980. But then, what is?

I’d also say nix on Bermuda. Expensive. I’ve been visiting in Nassau in the Bahamas, and there did seem to be reasonable costs of living, but take this with a huge grain of salt as I was not there long enough to get a real feel for the place.

Maybe one of the Hawaiian islands? They’re always looking for folk for low-level jobs. I’m just not sure how the rental prices are for raggedy-ass accomodations in a safe area. I know you can dang well forget really nice places…$$$$$$. But I know those kayaking guides and surf instructors and Denny’s staff have to live somewhere. Just a possibility, and I’m probably wrong.

:smack: I just missed the very obvious, although I could well be wrong on this, too.

If you don’t mind a 40-hour work week…there are jobs here on Kwajalein. Some of them are pretty low-stress-level, like mechanic, admin positions, admin assistant, etc.

For unaccompanied status, free room and board courtesy of the DoD (Dept. of Defense), free trip back to the states every year, storage of your stuff in the meantime, ship a lot of it out here for free, etc.

We got beaches, we got water (heck, lots of points on the island you can see both the lagoon AND the Pacific. Man, we got water! Have library, wood shop, ceramics shop, bowling alley, tennis courts, squash courts, boat and kayak rentals, And I think sailboats now, ask me in another couplea weeks. I just don’t know if you want to be saddled with a 7:30-4:30 job…

Anyway, here is a link to their site with job openings. Any questions, just ask!

Costa Rica sounds like a perfect spot for you. “English spoken” is a requirement for most jobs; lots of beach jobs; most tourists are from the US and Canada. Some of the people who work the tourist trade there are so used to speaking to customers in English that they have serious problems doing so in Spanish - I had this problem with a tica saleswoman and I’m from Spain.

I worked there for 6 months recently.

Depending on what kind of degree you got, you may want to look for a job with a hotel chain. You would be able to get the job in Canada but ask to be sent overseas. The place I worked for included a Four Seasons and there were very few ticos working at the hotel itself.

“Tico”: from Costa Rica.

We’ll take you – we specialize in big boobed, expat Canadians who work waiting tables and spend too much time at the beach. As a bonus we have plenty of dive shops, although to be fair the diving will be best a bit south of where I am.

Sure - your hired.

But be forwarned, I require lots and lots of sex from my manservant. I mean, like LOTS!

Where exactly are you? 'Cus that sounds pretty appealing, but USSA is sort of hard to pin down, ya know?

I’m hurt that you don’t just know.

Tampa area of Florida

Oh, and can I be the runnerup for Zebra’s job. You know, should be for any reason be unable to fulfill his obligations, yada yada yada?

:: blink ::

You must be in a different part of the country than me.

You can come visit me in the BG. It’s really, really cheap here. (How cheap? I once took a family of five, plus me, out to dinner. Total bill, including drinks was 17.30 lev. That’s about 8.50 euro.) And we have beaches on the Black Sea!

sigh

Yeah, I didn’t think so.

Nava, what is the cost of living like in Mallorca these days? I know out of all the places my DH has been, he’d like to live there the most if we could do what alice wants to do. Palma was one of the ports of call when he was in the Navy and he met an older woman there who was working for some military service organization - when she was in her mid-20s her grandfather died and left her an inheritance. Back then, Palma was cheap, so she moved there and basically was living off the inheritance and the small salary she got from work.

alice, if you are thinking about the U.S., don’t forget the East Coast. I’d love to live near the Outer Banks here in NC - you can get an apartment for $500-$600 a month and there are plenty of beach bum jobs, though we still do have winter here. You wouldn’t be likely to see snow, but you wouldn’t want to be lying out on the beach either.

So here’s a US specific question - how difficult is it for a person in my particular circumstances to get a green card in the US?

Really, frikin’ hard, is what I’ve always assumed, unless you’re planning on getting hitched to an American citizen, and I’m afraid the American citizen that I’m currently doing the nasty with would lose his blob if I even thought about hinting at it.

So - does anyone know? You have to pay a $35 fee to even ask the question (here in Canada you can take the test for FREE!) grrr.
