All you need to do is watch 10 minutes of “The Simple Life” to answer this question - it will be painfully obvious to you. Of course, that is a “reality” show, which is no more real than the idea that Paris’ hair and makeup were done by herself. But it’ll give you an idea of how she attained “bimbo” status.
Think of Paris Hilton as being a female Bertie Wooster without Jeeves.
Well…
…We’ll always have Paris.
This is departing a bit from the OP, but some of you might enjoy Jamie Johnson’s documentary “Born Rich.” He interviewed a number of people like Paris (although not Paris herself) about growing up privileged and what it means to have a productive life. The heirs he interviewed vary in what they do. Some, like Ivanka Trump, are being groomed to take a place in the family business, and a lot of the people he featured did go to college and had plans to do something. One of the wealthiest dropped out of college for two years to go work in the Texas oil fields. Others get involved in charity. Johnson’s own father, who has never worked, encourages him to take up some kind of hobby like collecting historical documents (he’s sincere, but it really comes off as awkward advice to a 21-year old.
Anyway, stories like theirs make Paris’ life seem all the more odd to me. It’s not clear to me that she really does anything besides seek a good time. You’d think that her fortune would buy so many opportunities, yet it appears she’s only indulging in the ones that mean exclusive shopping and entree to all the best parties. There were some other rich kids in his documentary who seemed to be in that same loop.
She’s obviously extremely good at making money and marketing her image. If you disagree with that, then I would ask how she got to be so rich and famous while millions of people (including, for example, her siblings) have not?
There are lots of people who are famous for nothing more than being extremely good at making money and marketing something.
The fact that it is her own image that she is marketing seems to be a critical difference.
Also it is not exactly uncommon for women who are attractive, young, and sexually assertive (not to mention rich and successful) to be reviled.
Because she’s the heiress to the Hilton fortune?
No, no, no. Plastics!
She seemed to have a sense of humor about herself when she appeared on Saturday Night Live.
I’m wondering if, as Emeria suggests, that people are basing their opinion of her on the obviously-staged “reality” show she has appeared on.
Well, one of the heirs of the Hilton fortune. Conrad Hilton had ten grandchildren and lord knows how many great-grandchildren.
