It’s wonderful! I moved there in 2005 and would still be there if the Air Force hadn’t called us to Utah.
Maybe due to the military bases in the area, the jobs outlook never got as horrible as other places in the South. Cost of living is good, there’s plenty of affordable housing, no shortage of things to do, great places to eat (hope you like fresh seadfood), a half dozen amazing beaches, stunning ocean views and a nice, warm climate most of the year. It will occasionally get hurricane warnings and there’s congestion on some freeways right now as they’re expanded but we’re moving back there at the first opportunity.
One thing to remember; Charleston made a lot of its money because of slavery; the remnants and history of that are still unapologetically present in many places, especially downtown. Charleston shows its history with warts and all, but the people are friendly, generous, kind and laidback for the most part. Here’s the local paper.
If you want to be a little removed from the bustle of the city, consider Berkley County, just up I-26 a few miles.
Confirmed today that we are relocating to Charleston, South Carolina. Lady Chance will be working in North Charleston heading a development team. I have about 5 weeks to make the move happen.
Wow! Congrats! Are you going to rent first before committing to an area to buy in? Do you have school-age kids? Working in N. Charleston (which is how I got my username, BTW) you could choose to live in Berkley County just as easily as the county line is the North Charleston boundary. May I ask what company she’ll be with?
I’m so excited for you!!
Sorry, I meant say Dorchester County, not Berkeley. My bad!
The neighborhood I lived in is called Archdale; it’s mixed residential - apartments, condos and stand alone houses. Here’s a house in Archdale some friends of mine owned till they got transferred to WV.
