I never knew. I was watching the local noon news where they featured a story about Women’s professional tackle football. This aint no sissy game, these women do the same moves as the men.
Okay so you probably don’t hear a big wack when two women collide like the men. But whoooo hooooo!!!
They’ve been off to a rough start, but they’re going now. My aunt coaches the OK City Wildcats, so she’s been keeping me up to date on all the goings on for the past few months. They had their first game a couple of weeks ago, and from what I understand, she said some of the women on the other team were like 200-250 lbs. And mean. I don’t know if she was exagerating or not, but they sounded scary to me. I’m supposed to go watch their first home game, but I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to make it up there. I know my mom and sister will be, so I’m sure I’ll here all about it.
I was reading through Colorado’s team roster and these women range from 115 - 300 pounds.
The woman that I noticed that was 115 pounds is a corner back! The 300 pound woman is 5’10" guess what position she plays – offensive guard. Shoot if I were a quarterback I would be more than happy to have such a large woman in my offensive team!
Shoot with some of the stats of these women I could get out there and play if I weren’t such a lazy ass bum.
Well, I’m with it! I was 100 lbs and voted MVP way back on yond in high school Powderpuff football. Mostly because I was too stupid to realize how small I was, corner back.(I just ran like hell.) So I know that ladies with a bigger frame can certainly play the game well.
I was always too chicken in my youth to do “Powder Puff” football but as I age and not so wimpy I have considered getting involved in some ice skating classes and getting involved in a woman’s hocky league.
Problem is I don’t know the scope of these women…some of them seem much larger than me…
A few years back, a player was signed with the Buffalo Bills (sorry, I don’t recall his name). Sportscasters, as a human interest item, reported that his mother had also been a professional football player. So women’s professional football has apparently been around awhile albeit very underpublicized.
I did a search for it on iWon and it came up with an article that stated the original league started back in 1965 (if I remember correctly) and Ohio comes to mind.
I spoke earlier with my father about it and given the fact that woman’s soccer and other sports are becoming more popular with the young girls, this could also mean that a national football league could become a Saturday alternative to college games for people around the country.
Personally I think it kicks butt. I have known many women who are very athletic but never had any real sports that involve contact even though their personality is as such.
I hope this doesn’t become what the AFL (is that right, it’s running a little late for me now) where it fades into non-existance.
