Okay, Prognosticators, the Super Bowl Challenge: who plays, who wins?

Apparent from all the smack talked in the various FFL boards, there are a lot of you out there who think you know a little something about football. Here’s your chance to show what you’ve really got.

In about ten days the official NFL season will start. It will culminate on January 27 in New Orleans in the big game, Super Bowl XXXVI. Before the season begins, tell us all:

Who will represent the AFC?

Who will represent the NFC?

Who takes it all?

If you get it right you can come back in about 5 months and gloat [sub]or question why you didn’t bet the farm in Vegas[/sub], even update your sig line to boast of your prowess.

Yeah, I know about football, but one of the conditions on my deal with the devil is that I use my knowledge only for evil, never for good. If I post the outcome of the next Super Bowl, then other people will realize the truth and can use that for financial gain.

Ol’ Scratch won’t be too pleased with me if I do that.

So, lno, you seem to have downshifted on me.

I wouldn’t want you to screw up your pact with Ol’Scratch, but are we going to have that friendly, hopsy, side wager on our first Straight Dope[sub]©[/sub] Fantasy league game or not? [sub]I assume you have been monitoring all the posts over there?

Minnesota beats Indianapolis in a blow-out.

I am leaning toward Denver over Philadelphia in a squeaker, but need to do a little more research before cementing my final position.

Yikes! I’d better go check out those posts and regain the braggadocio.

And xizor? I love you.

Looking at the stats lately, I think I’m gonna go way out on a limb here and say Buccaneers (but you knew I’d say that, right Shibb?) over Seattle. Weird, but I have a hunch.
I have the feeling this thread was created solely for me.

Eagles over the Raiders in revenge for Super Bowl XV.

Just got back from Vegas, I placed bets on three teams: Washington, Buffalo and Green Bay. Not neccesarily because these are the teams I 100% will contend, but the odds being offered were a good value.

Why Buffalo and Washington? Both teams outgained their opponents more than they won against tough schedules, and are playing easier schedules this year. Also, 4 of the last SB champs went 8-8 or less the year before, which is the case w/ Buff and Wash.

As for Green Bay, they had a winning record against playoff temas last year, and won I believe all 6 or 5 of their last 6 games in 2000.

But I’m sticking with Buffalo v. Washington.

Good handicapping site, though the NFL preview needs to be updated:

Well, I might have had The World’s Sexiest Bucs Fan[sup]TM[/sup] in mind a bit when I kicked this off. But I will never publicly pick our Bucs to win the Super Bowl and curse them to a season of ignominy.

As for Vinnie’s picks, I think he could get somewhere with the Pack, but IMHO the Bills and Skins deserve those long odds this year.

Time will tell.

to ladyfoxfyre: my comment about the Bucs in another thread was meant as no disrespect to the team, which obviously has a bundle of talent. And will probably beat the living sh*t outta my Bears twice this year. :frowning:

That being said, the team I’ll be pulling for to win it all this year is the Eagles and I don’t care who they beat, although I’d rather enjoy it if they pounded the Raiders.

…BTW, where’s Gazoo, the resident SDMB/NFL Prognosticator?

I’ll take Tennessee over Minnesota.

Remember you heard it here first.

I’m gonna say Tennessee over Tampa Bay. The score will be something like 10-6.

Now, is the time to jump on the bandwagon, I’m drivin’.

On to Nawlins.

[sub]Of course, you know these things are hard to turn, so if there is a big wall in the way, we is gunna crash… hard:eek:[/sub]

Baltimore over either Minnesota or Tampa Bay.

Browns, yes Browns over T.B. in a walk over. (Points to his sig

Last season, the New York Giants, who utterly flattened the opposition in 12 of 16 games and made the Vikings look like an Arena League team, except with less offense, in the conference championship, made a lot of people look stupid. Specifically, the ones who crowed/bellyached/screamed about how the NFC Totally Outclassed The AFC In Every Way Imaginable. It says something when a team that goes all the way to the Super Bowl before losing can still draw flack for being “weak” and “undeserving” and “blah blah blah”, despite just about owning the other teams in the conference.

Don’t expect this to change much. There are plenty of good teams, they’re just not Super Bowl-caliber. Expect a letdown from the Giants, who will have the burden of an entire offseason’s worth of “I told you so” garbage as well as a tougher schedule and the pressure of defending NFC champs. The Lions could not make it to the Super Bowl with Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Shannon Sharpe, Junior Seau, Charles Woodson, and Matt Stover. The Eagles have High Expectations, which translates to Meltdown By Week 6. (And c’mon, a team doesn’t just shoot to the top after 3+ absolutely horrendous seasons.) Washington has a new coach, and since when has this EVER improved a team? (Don’t say Bill Parcells; it’s hard to see how he couldn’t have improved the 1-15 Jets.) The Rams have been figured out, the Saints aren’t quite there yet, and actual improvement for the Vikings and Cardinals happens about as fast as continental drift.

That said, I expect the Buccaneers to win the conference. They’ve steadily improved and worked out the flaws in the offense (to complement the formidable defense), a sure formula for success. They definitely had a chance against the Giants last season; don’t expect them to lose again. The Vikings will make a lot of noise before flopping, per usual, and the NFC West will beat each other up before getting collectively bounced before the conference championships.

I like the Titans in the AFC. Their biggest challenger, Baltimore, isn’t the same team; their offense, which wasn’t great to begin with, suffered a terrible blow with the loss of Jamal Lewis, and this will hurt them. Plus the other teams have an entire season’s worth of tapes to find a way to beat the Ravens’ defense. The Titans will dominate an overloaded division that lacks a decent rival and has two complete doormats. 8-10 wins in the division, easy. For some reason, the entire AFC East, despite plenty of talent, always seems to choke at some point, so they’re not a threat. As for the AFC West: The Broncos, whether they admit it or not, just haven’t been the same since John Elway retired (what does it say about an organization when they can’t give one of the greatest quarterbacks ever even halfway decent run support until the very end of his career?). The Chiefs are stuck with the albatross of High Expectations…sheesh, when will these people ever learn? Mike Holmgren is in a must-win situation in Seattle; expect him to crack when his team, as always, fails to live up to their talent.

So there you have it. Titans vs. Buccaneers, the two teams that deserve it the most. The Titans will recapture their magic of two seasons ago, take home field advantage, and ride it all the way to the Super Bowl, while the Bucs will be challenged, but put it together when it really counts and win a down-to-the-wire NFC Championship.

Super Bowl prediction: Titans 24, Buccaneers 14. Or 6. Or 10. It doesn’t matter, because Tennessee is a tougher, more complete team and will make their second chance count.

All predictions subject to change pending how the actual season turns out, of course…

New Orleans losing to Tennessee.

I’m going with this mostly because the Saints amazed me last year by winning with no (healthy) big-name players. They just had a team of people who worked well together and played nice, classic football.
[sub]None of this St Louis “score a lot and hope the other offence is asleep” crap[/sub]

Tennesse because, c’mon, they ought to have won it by now, given the level they’ve been playing at.

Now, the optimist in me says that Skins whip New Orleans in the playoffs, head to the Super Bowl, and kick the Ravens in the groin (after winning fair and square).

Denver has the depth to go all the way this year. They’ll make it to the SuperBowl, but lose to…

The Rams (hey, I’m a St. Louisan). This is as much bias as it is a real opinion that they have what it takes again this year. The offense is still scarily potent and they’ve rebuilt their defense so every game won’t be a shoot out to see who scores last. The only thing that’ll stop the Rams would be injury to either Kurt Warner or Marshall Faulk. With Trent Green off the team now starting for the Chiefs, the Rams lost their depth at quarterback. Joe Germaine cannot fill in as well as Green could for Warner. And there’s just no replacement for Marshall Faulk.

If something happens to either Warner or Faulk, then this may be the year of the Buc.

Well, I might have had The World’s Sexiest Bucs Fan[sup]TM[/sup] in mind a bit when I kicked this off. **

Tee hee hee…

Aww Shibb…you’re such a sweetie. Where’s my jersey by the way?

I’m glad to see so many people taking the Bucs into consideration in this thread, not many people realize what a complete team they are, and I can’t wait until the championship games begin.
