For the past several weeks, my wife and I have been listening to the Christmas music programming* on the local version of the Wave, because they are marginally less likely than the local Clear Channel easy listening station to play The Christmas Shoes. Anyway, their promotion these days is that every time they play Bing Crosby’s version of White Christmas, you have to try calling in as caller #9, and if you do, they give you a thousand dollars. The fine print is that they only do it once per day, and as a result, I have only heard that record ONE TIME since we started listening.
I don’t mind not winning the thousand, but I do like that version better than some of the others they play. And there are some songs that I would FAR rather have them play only once per day, minimizing my chances of hearing them. So this morning when Jose Feliciano’s Feliz Navidad came on, I just grabbed the phone and called the request line, intending to ask them to change the once-per-day song to that. Got busy signals the first three times, then on the fourth attempt, it began to ring, and a young lady came on the line, saying “You’re caller number one,” then putting me on hold.
A minute or so later she came back on the line and asked for my first name and city, which I gave, then back on hold. After about five minutes, I heard my own voice on the stereo, saying my first name and city, and the voices of four other people doing the same thing. Then the young lady’s voice came back on the air, congratulating the five of us for qualifying to win a trip anywhere in the world, plus a trip to Cabo San Lucas if I was a member of their VIP Club (I wasn’t, but I am NOW). Later, an intern came on and took down my contact information. The winner will be selected and announced between four and five hours from the time of this posting.
While I do hope I win the prize, I already consider myself a winner, because I did not neglect to make my request that they change the trigger song to Feliz Navidad.
