What is everyone’s opinion on McVeigh seeking to overturn his death sentance in wake of the 4,000 pages of documents that weren’t given to his lawyers?
Frankly, I think he should have been executed on his original date and gotten no stay for as long as he has. The 168 people he killed, including those children, didn’t get a stay of execution.
I think its seriously foul and insulting to everyone who was affected by the bombing to let him go on appealing the verdict, especially since he was so gung-ho about being executed in the beginning.
Its only fair to give him a stay. His lawyers deserve to have access to the same information as the prosecuters. My opinion of the death penalty would be further lowered if they did not give him a stay. McVeigh still has rights. To me, it doesn’t matter that it is insulting to anyone that he doesn’t get executed on his original date. I would like to think that this country is governed under a rule of law rather than a rule of mob.
Well, I think about the time you made your post, Judge Mache made it a moot point. His request for a new trial was denied and, barring a successful appeal, he will be executed on Monday.
I think giving his lawyers more time to look at the new documents was fine. If they had found evidence which warranted a new trial, I think that they should have given him one. But, the documents did not fundamentally change this case so, off to the injection he goes.
I’d like to believe that when someone kills 168 people that they are, in fact, forfeiting their rights.
If you cant live by our rules, why should our rules protect you?
I also realize the importance of these laws, even if it means red tape and delays.
In the attempt to protect people from unjust execution we will occasionally have to deal with this manner of delay. It’s part of what makes this America, I guess.
But if you wanna look at injustice, take the Manson Family trials. Condemned to death for the murder of 7 innocent people… OVERTURNED a year later.
Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houghton, Charles Manson, Tex Watson, and Patricia Kremwinkle get to go up for parole every 8 years or so.
That, in my opinion, is injustice at its best.
McVeigh… well… so long as the end result is him paying for his crime… after 6 years, one more month is a small price to pay to insure that somewhere down the road, the wheels of justice will keep turning smoothly.
Very simple. To ensure that there is NO doubt that every I was dotted and every T crossed. That this, of all proceedings, was conducted exactly according to the letter of the law.
There is no doubt that McVeigh is guilty.
However, even the appearance of wrongdoing on the part of his prosecutors is unacceptable. I won’t go into a long deal on this, supposing other crazies out there who may be inspired by imagining that McVeigh was railroaded, as he was by the actions of the ATF/FBI at Waco. I’ll just say… the last thing I want in this world is my grandkids coming to me, working on their senior thesis, comparing the trials of the Rosenbergs, Sacho & Vanzetti, and McVeigh, with the working title, “Miscarriages of Modern Justice.”
If it wasn’t done right the first time, the law allows for a process to fix that. Simple. Give the additional evidence an honest review, and determine what is right.
