Old adage about American wine being better in price and quality still true?

My Brother-in-Law has been the head winemaker there for the past 15 years.

He thanks you.

Allow me to thank him! Pelligrini is one of my favorites.

I got into Long Island wines as more of a local point of pride rather than a very keen interest in wine (bit of a beer guy myself) but after many trips out to our little bit of wine country, I’ve certainly developed a taste for some of the better ones.

Blind taste testing had led me to conclude that on average, LI local wines tend to be a little more expensive than imports, mostly due to the size of the wineries here. IMO, It appears that it’s cheaper to import low to medium priced wines from large operations than it is to produce them locally. The bright side is that overall quality is high & many of the higher quality wines tend to be a better value than comparable imports.

That winery is now known as Castello di Borghese, which is also excellent.

My BIL also makes wine under his own label of Pumphouse, plus my sister’s wine label Suruh. He owns and operates Premium Wine Group which is a contract winemaking facility on the North Folk that produces many local labels, such as Martha Clara and Lieb Family Cellars and consults for many others. If you are drinking North Folk wines, Russ has been involved somewhere along the line.

Had it once and only once. I think it was the '96. I know nothing about wine and I knew it was the best thing I’d ever had. One of the great disappointments of this Great Recession is that my fantasy world plan to buy up old cellared Grange for pennies hasn’t really panned out. It’s still way too pricey to buy on my own dime (the one time I had it was on someone else’s).

That’s part of the old wisdom too, although I think it is probably more justified. At least in California, the vintage years don’t mean much. OTOH, I never once found a truly interesting or appealing California wine that wasn’t at least a few years old, based on the year of vintage shown on the label.

Allow me to throw in some support for our Canadian wineries, in particular Jackson-Triggs.

careful, there is some really crap PN from NZ out at the moment. The good stuff is bloody unreal but people are cashing in on the profile.
