I’m terribly sorry. I think you are right. Well, I remember both threads when they first started. This will teach me to post to the MB while in a state of extreme sleep deprivation.
Ooh! Ooh! I remember MPSIMS/Titanic Wallpaper, Ruda Duda, cat’s butts, and Mustang vs. Spitfire! I rememember

I used to be GripGirl, and for about a week I was SN921. I remember RangerJeff (miss him!) I remember Geogre (Pmpddaymak, and I can’t remember what he changed his name to). I remember using colors in text. I remember threads that got hijacked, and the policy of changing the title after it had fully diverged and adding “(was: -----”). I remember Jane settling disputes. I remember JAXAshby, although I think he’s been linked here, too. Geez, I shouldn’t give so much immortality to trolls. I remember Whytewitch/Andrea. I remember when the late Melin was Krftmistress. I remember when almost none of us had met IRL.
Sigh.
Oh, and I remember the big changeover of January 98! The previous board was wiped, and we got the pushpins, which everyone hated!
masafer, you don’t have to be thin-skinned to consider the standard Cyberian54/Optamissed/BLUICOOL/JohnJohn Jewish bashing a flame war. As I recall, he came out of nowhere (like that was a surprise) to attack you for simply expressing the Jewish point of view on a subject.
Diane, weren’t you Kitten8808? Or have I mixed you in with the couple of dozen Cats and Kats and Kittens we had? (Even Rebel1011 was Kathy.)
And I certainly remember Katpower (although I doubt I ever figured out what the FHP in your sig meant).
Of course, posting here we still have TUBADIVA/Jennie and LynnBodoni and Eutychus55/Pat as moderators.
Bob/Bobmois registered as Big Iron and George/HpstrDufuz registered as The Crimson Hipster. Bob posted for a bit, but rarely drops in, now. George is also an infrequent visitor, but he did post to the Defend Gore the Liar! thread.
Drain Bead posts here, of course. And after being gone too long, MEBuckner has recently begun posting here.
Tom - Yeah, that was me. There were a lot of cats back then!
I really miss Bob, George, Jeff, Andrea (has anyone heard how she is doing?), Steve, Pam, and many others.
Wow, someone remembers me for one thread I participated in 3 years ago. IIRC, I was trying to point out that Jews for Jesus gets funding from evangelical christian organizations, but Cyberian (couldn’t even rembeber his name) came out of left field bashing me. Still awfully hard to break lurker mode though…
I was there as JA1166 or Just Joan.
No wonder I changed my user name.
Whatever happened to JaxAshby websight. I always thought that was fun to torture people with. I bet that guy thought he was el studo.
Another long time reg checking in. I was Elle794. The Ruda Duda thread was with Ben Abbate and the ageism debate, wasn’t it?
My very first post to the old board was about cats, of course, and was answered by Lynn.
My first flame came from TISW, who told me if I didn’t like the fart threads I didn’t have to open them. She called me a cranky bitch, and I used the name “The Princess CB” in my sigline for a long time.
I still hear from Rev. Bob via e-mail every now and again, and George and I used to IM, but I haven’t heard from him in a while now.
I was on the old AOL board as well. I would be best remembered as StrTrkr777. (Yes, I kept my old name so that at least some folks would hopefully remember me.
I remember several of the above posters as well as CKDex and SoxFan (who posts very infrequently here), and several others.
My first (or very early on) thread was a question about Jewish practices and Cyberian jumped on me for trying to perpetuate myths about the Jews. Thankfully, CK answered my question honestly and nicely.
I too miss those old days, but I am glad that I can access the web version from almost anywhere.

Checking in. My first post on the AOL MB was about 3 months after it had opened for business. After the first “masked chat”, I had decided to use one SN for the MB and another just for the chats to see if anyone could figure it out. Toward the end of our AOL stay, I joned Ranger Jeff as the cohost for the Saturday chats. If and when we get web-based chats, I’ll ask Jenny to change my username to my official one.
-Jeff Olsen (aka Snoopy1186; SD JoeCool)
I know where it is! Perhaps I should submit it to Weird URLs.
It has multiple meanings, but most of them are meaningless to anyone not in on it. One of my favorites was “Fire in Hulk’s Pants”.
Yep, I read and posted on AOL. Same username, even. Not as much as now, but I was there.
Do we all get cupcakes, or something?
Yep, I’m an oldie. Joined the AOL boards right after the Great Switch to the pushpin boards. I still remember everyone complaining about it.
Random question: does anyone remember that one time when that random guy comes out of nowhere and accuses all the SDers of being fat, lazy, stupid people who have nothing better to do that sit around on their asses all day and think up stupid questions to ask. I remember that…anyone else?
oh, the good old days…I kinda miss the old boards.
I was there for just under two years, and was
the queen of Mundane and Pointlessness. George even made me my own little thread after MPSIMS turned into a baseball conversation.
That was just someone trolling I believe… We had lots of that. However, I do remember it.
You can still get the boards, actually. If you had GQ board bookmarked, the direct keyword still works. Using the search feature, one can dig up all sorts of fun stuff. So, check for it. Or ask someone who has it.
(Unless you’re my boyfriend… Like I told you dear, they don’t exist. AOL canceled them, deleted them, and no on has access. Really. I swear!)
-Lanna
Actually, Melin was Lindy1026. I’m pretty sure that Melis was Krftmistress and, later Kiltgrrrl. (Are there too many vowels in Krftmistress?)
I also notice that in my earlier post, some gremlin removed CKDextHavn from the list of old folks who now are moderators. (I know I typed his name when I created the post, dangit.)
We also went through this exercise, somewhat, about ten months ago:
Old Doper Seeks Other Old Dopers
I was there. I was Kyla Sedai. I tried to follow the Bob and George Show over at MFSD, but I dunno, there’s only so long you can watch two guys argue about who was the greatest point guard of all time.
Actually, that was one of my favorite things about Ruda Duda - the way it split into so many topics of conversation. It was like a slightly meaner and only vaguely more pointed version of MPSIMS.
BTW, a number of old R.E.G.S are over at Fathom: http://fff.fathom.org/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true.
I miss the old SDMB too. This one is pretty good, but when AOL shut down the old one, I was just absolutely distraught.
Doh! You’re right! Except it was Krftmstrss. Screen names could not exceed ten numbers or letters.
I was on AOL, as well. I think I was TamJamB in those days, although I always signed myself ‘Jess.’ I was a poster not a lurker, although I wasn’t terribly prolific – no more than I am here. The poster I remember best was the idiot kid who wanted to be a librarian because it was a nice easy job! Dipshit. He (or she?) also used to get all spun up because all of us Dopers spent so much time learning and thinking. I mean, who needs to know stuff, anyway? I was kind of sorry that person didn’t make the switch to this board. She (or he) was profoundly irritating, but it was fun to poke at him/her through the bars in her/his Cage Of Willful Stupidity.
