Old friend and parallel lives.

Mundane and pointless, but pretty cool.

Looked up an old friend this week. We haven’t seen each other in 11 years. But that was very brief.

We worked together in Denver 17 years ago. We worked nights and became quite good friends. Nothing romantic, but there is a certain camaraderie that goes with shift work.

Especially graveyard shift.

We both left the private company within a month of each other. We ended up drifting apart and loosing touch with each other.

I have since moved to the mountains and am working for County government going on 16 years.

She moved to the mountains and is working for County government going on 16 years.

The are adjacent counties.

My Wife also works for the County. We married 11 years ago. At as ski area. No kids.

Her Husband works for the County. They married 11 years ago. At a ski area. No kids.

Heh, she still listens to the cassette tapes I made for her nearly 2 decades ago.

We are going to meet for lunch soon.

I have one of those too. It’s not so much that our lives are identical but even though we never planned it we’ve been ending up in the same places our whole lives. Jeremy and I lived in the same apartment building when we were little kids in the Bronx and then he moved away to a better neighborhood. When I got to college I ran into him and he was living in the same dorm that I was and we hung out together for the next 4 years. After college I stayed in upstate NY for a year or so and then quit my job and took off on Dead tour and ran into him at the second show because he had quit a job to go on tour too, and we traveled around for another year. Then he went back east and I kept traveling and ended up in California. I had lost touch with him at that point. After I had been here for about 2 years I was in a store and heard an unmistakable voice with a South African/Bronx accent and there he was. It turned out that we lived two blocks away from each other. We haven’t lived more than 10 miles away from each other now in over 20 years, and at the moment he’s renting our cabin which is about 500’ from the back door.

Karyn? I know a Karyn. It’s a unique name. Do you live in Colorado?

Nope, I live in California and my real first name is spelled with an ‘e’, but there were a few of those in the member list so I didn’t want to pick something so close to theirs that I confused anyone or irritated another Karen. I have a horrible time picking user names because I always hate them 10 minutes after I register so I got into the habit of using something close to my first or middle name.
