(Old) Gather 'round the fire in the MMP

Thank you. So do you, I’ve always thought so!

Which cracked me up, too!

Thank you. I used to go all out, but it was so much work. Now that I’m on my own, I get almost as much pleasure from the scaled-down version with a whole lot less effort. Which is a gift in and of itself.

I can totally see that in you. I made the whole meal for many others in years past, too, but have now scaled back both on how loudly the board groans and how many people are invited to partake. Letting the rough end drag these days, we are.

Ok. Of course I was only referring to how I do things, no judgment on others who do different. I’ll happily eat off a paper plate if that’s how my host serves the food. It takes all kinds to make a world, non?

Don’t blame you there. I have a friend who makes and cares for knives, so he’s an excellent resource for sharpening. I’ve had most of my knives for approaching 50 years. I use them properly, get them sharpened on the regular and I don’t need more, so long as these continue to take an edge. I use my favorite so often that it’s getting pretty worn – may have to replace that one. I have a favored serrated one as well – picked it up in Germany 20 years ago. I use it for lots more than just cutting bread!

@fachverwirrt, do you have an MMP nickname that got past me? Are you the Pavo to whom metal mouse refers? In any case, good to hear the cats are learning! I shuddered to read about Hazel’s fascination with the disposal drain. Crazy girl!

The cost of veterinary care these days is truly staggering. You have my heartfelt empathy! I’m thankful that Ollie’s itchy skin is so vastly relieved from the anti-yeast baths that I don’t think I’m going to have to modify his diet. < whew >

I’m with you exactly on how to prepare mashed potatoes. I make mine just the same. The only thing I’ve done now and then in the past is add a few cubes of boiled celeriac, which is delicious, too – but mostly, I make them as you do. No egg here, either. Boo fae, what does the egg add?

Well done on the smaller trousers, metal mouse! Those are the best benchmarks, aren’t they?

I leave the white fairy lights in my picture in place year round. They create a warm ambiance in the house in an instant. Hope Spot continues to hold his fire on the kitty barf-o-rama!

dicey, tea with chocolate chips is something I’ve never heard of! < furiously scribbles a note > I’ll have to keep an eye out.

Enjoy your cozy sloth weekend, nut!

Thank you! Easy as hell, too.

Another foggy, cold morning – but no worries! The wood burner does its job well! The house is actually warmer at the moment than when I leave it up to the heat pump.

I was a good, busy girl today. Arose at the stupid early hour of 5:00 a.m., washed all the sofa throws and the flokati rug, did my bi-annual trash run, rollsucked half the house, changed out the furnace filter, cleaned two of the three bathrooms top to bottom, gave Ollie another bath and brought in another load of firewood to get us through today and tonight. We’re still having overnight almost-freezing temps, so I’ll continue to baby the heat pump until tomorrow.

I defrosted meatballs and marinara sauce I made a month ago with pasta for dinner, will have that with a simple salad.

Time to throw another couple of logs on the fire. Enjoy your evenings, everyone!

Howdy Y’all! I went to the sto’ this mornin’. Note that I said I wouldn’t go next week. Anywho, I made the executive decision that there will be collards on Turkey Day, and needed the King’s Hawai’ian rolls for little chikin sallit sammiches, thus the trip. I got two nice bunches which will be plenty. I cleaned ‘em in addition to makin’ chikin sallit. After such a bzzy mornin’, I needed nappage and day drinkin’. It was pleasant out so we sat out on the back porch and warded off scurvy and malaria twice. Thus is the news from swampland.

Thankfully, Buddy and Miss Yet-to-be-named are not participating in this event. Buddy does have a bit of a case of the grouchies the last few days. Not sure whether he’s missing Allie, annoyed about the kitten moving in (she’s been hanging out here at least occasionally for several weeks now), or just having a random mood swing.

Yes, I’m Pavo. Short for Pavarotti, because of my opera background.

We’re not really worried about Hazel getting her face all the way down to the disposal blades, just there’s no grate in that drain and her head is still small enough to fit in a pipe.

We just finished a meal with them staying almost entirely off the table. Hazel jumped up once, but quickly jumped back down when wife said “nope”. Didn’t even need a squirt.

The Black Pearl is starting its new existence as an artificial reef.

By the way, how do I quote something from a different thread, without quoting it the thread where it is and then pasting it here?

Well, what’s she going to do? Fire you?

Up from naptime, watching hockey. Having a Monte Carlo with tuna steak, rice, and stir fried bok choy, peppers, green onions, and 'shrooms. When I was turning on the TV PC, Spot kept trying to eat my fingers.

Also: SO BUYING THIS!

Is La Jefa a mole for your competitor?

Are you Arthur Dent?

Indeed.

I do the “quote” thing, then cut and paste from the reply to the thread I wanted it posted, then close the other thread reply tab.

Had my usual dorito salad. Smoke alarm went off. Theres no sound in my apt. but I heard the faint beeping and reflexively walked down the hall.
I got the 1st floor specifically to not worry when that happened.

Evening all. Did my usual gym workout and have replaced many of the calories I burned, so all is well. It rained (or looked like rain) for most of the day, and we might get some more late tonight, but the temperature is still in the mid-60’s so not to bad.

Transforming into the Scroll robot…

doggio, I always get Red Solo cups, either brand or Kroger label.

Dicey, no snow here, we might see some in late January/early February but no guarantees. Enjoy your chocolate tea!

flyboy, good catch on the spam.

rocky, glad the eye goo (which sounds kinda icky) is being treated.

Coppertone, that reminds me I need to change the batteries in my smoke/Co2 alarms. Add that to my list.

And that’s all I have to report right now. Hopefully more later.

That’s what I do; but it seems like the ‘new and improved’ Discourse would have an easier way.

I really hate spam, so I tend to be (try to be) extra-diligent. Detecting one that really looks legitimate is satisfying.

A certain kitten thinks the top of the birdcage is a great hangout. The bird doesn’t seem at all bothered by this.

Mrs. L.A.’s birthday is Monday, but we went to her Birthday Dinner tonight. A couple of days ago, she acknowledged my impending layoff, and suggested we go to the casino for prime rib. After a long day of foot-nursing, she asked if we could go to our usual birthday spot in Blaine. She had her usual filet mignon Oscar. I usually have the filet mignon without the crab. Tonight I had the Bavarian Platter: a Schnitzel, a sausage, a pork chop, ground mustard,Sauerkraut, red cabbage, and potatoes. We started with bread with olive oil and Balsamic vinegar (and parsley? and garlic) for dipping. Goulash soup for starters.

In addition to dinner, I bought her three T-shirts. The first one, which she opened tonight, says, “I am not drunk!’ and ‘You are talking to a cat.

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. It’s cloudy and 60 degrees Ferret Height(15.56 Centipedes), There’s a Fog Warning.

It would be rude to not reply when the cat talks to you.

The bird has been raised with felines. She might think she is a flying cat.

Well, the weekend of sloth plan has been slightly interrupted… Got a call last night from another student asking if I could possibly pick up a fridge for her today, as she has no car, the taxi companies won’t do it, and the friend who normally helps her with this stuff has had an accident and currently can’t drive.

This is the occasionally unfortunate side effect of being friends with a lot of international students- almost none of them can drive over here, plus I’m bad at saying no. Also a lot of them, her included, are from cultures where it’s normal- expected even- to ask your friends for help as one of the first options, rather than as a last resort.

Oh well, I can detour to the garden centre afterwards if I go that way, and it’s probably better for me than fusing to the sofa.

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 67 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 80 and sunny. Lots on today’s agenda for me anyhow. Chikin sallit sammiches need to get fixed, my DAWGS play a cupcake game against Charlotte at 12:45 p.m., the memorial service is at five p.m. and I will have to deal with candle duty after that. I might not have time to squeeze in nappage and day drinkin’! My RDOS cred walks a thin line today.

doggio a Waffle House snow globe is a must have! Also WH would be the only place open in a southern USofA snow.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.

Happy Sattidy Y’all!

When I met my husband, he had an Arthur Dent bathrobe. Not intentially, as far as I know.

I’m a bit more paranoid. (No idea about the tea itself.)

Today we had lunch from the freezer - ricotta filled shells with sauce, plus green beans. I already checked in for the hotel, but have to wait until hour before I can check in for our flight.

Then maybe we should pack. Hubby brought up the suitcases, and there are clothes in the dryer. Halfway done, right?

This just cracks me up! Any chance of a pic?

We got a fair bit of rain overnight, judging by the driveway puddle size, and it’s supposed to continue all morning. About lunch time, we do the next coat on all the teak. At 1:30, we take Otis to his last Beginner training class (Intermediate starts Jan 17) and at 3:30, he gets groomed, 'cause he’s getting stinky. So the middle of our day is full, the rest is TBD.

It’s probably the last bit of real chillage I have till next week. Tomorrow begins my T-day prep with the first bird in the smoker. I’m glad I worked out a menu and a schedule and wrote it down. I’m feeling prepared, mostly. I’ve also started a shopping list for the last-minute items I’ll get Mon or Tues - preferably early on Tues.

I need to remember to talk to Daughter about Weds - does she need me to corral her spawn? I know they’re off school but I don’t know if she and SIL have to work. We can straighten that out at doggie training.

For the moment, tho, I’m having a bit of quiet time as I caffeinate.

Happy Saturday!!

Good morning! I’m up, and I’m waiting for the coffee maker to finish. I’m listening to On the Media on NPR, typing, and eating a mandarin orange. Multitasking in my near-sleep.

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 7c/44f with a predicted high of 8c/45f and cloudy. Weather app says “Don’t you just fucking love the greyness of everything? I fucking do!” It’s definitely grey out there and it’s been raining, a good day not to have to leave the house.

That’s rather…err….short-sighted! Did nobody think about anything like that when they agreed to her proposal?

The very thought makes me shudder

It still amuses me that people get so worked up about what’s essentially a glorified Sunday roast  Not that you and Daughter would do that, you’re far too sensible to fall out over a missing condiment or something like that!

A little bit of colour, that’s about it. My usual potatoes are Maris Piper which are very white so the mash is quite pale, Butter and egg give it a nice yellowish tint - and it’s how my mum made mash, so I am of course following where she led.

Blossom has more than made up for it on their behalf! She scoffed all her treats last night, then scoffed Cherry’s treats too, and had extra when we got home from our night out. This morning, she’d managed to redecorate the living room carpet for me. Luckily I had planned to use the Vax on it so that will get properly cleaned later.

That sounds like a scrumptious dinner! ‘im indoors is very fond of prime rib, it’s not a cut we usually get here but he has found a local butcher who can supply it (he calls it a standing rib roast) so he’s happy now.

You’ll get karma points for helping someone out though, that’s got to be worth something, as well as a bonus visit to the garden centre. There is cake, isn’t there?

‘im indoors still marvels at the fact that I can get all the components of a Christmas lunch on the table at the same time. Planning for it all was one of the first things drummed into us by our Home Ec teacher. I have a lot to thank Mrs Brooker for, she taught us well.

Yesterday morning I sent the minutes from Tuesday’s meeting to the person who needs them. Then I took minutes for another dept meeting (those will get written up on Monday). Afterwards, since there were only two of us in the office, we made a start on the xmas decorations. Yes, there is usually an inter-office competition in our College, and yes we are very competitive! I did do a bit of actual work in between, but it was nice to start making the office look bright and cheerful.

The travel gods were only partially in my favour on the way home, but I got back in reasonably good time, washed up the food tubs I’d taken to campus and tended to the needs of the cats. ‘im indoors had pulled some Thai curry out of the freezer for dinner so we had that and then got ourselves ready to go out. We were running a little late so we got an Uber into town and headed straight for the Giffard. We went in and the barman was already pouring our drinks  then we went upstairs to see the first of three bands. They were all very good, chatted to friends and afterwards we went downstairs to the main bar for the rest of the evening. Drinking, hugging, dancing and chatting filled the rest of the night, and we left just before 2am.

I had to summon an Uber to get us home, the taxi rank was empty apart from one guy who offered us a fixed fare home which we turned down because all the cabs are licensed and should be running on a meter. If they offer a flat rate, they’re usually unlicensed so we don’t use them. I booked an Uber instead, using our normal drop-off spot as the location. Then had to explain to a tipsy ‘im indoors that we had to go round to the back of the art gallery rather than get picked up from the front of the building. Anyway, we got home in one piece which is the aim of the night. Might have to go and do it all over again tonight as there’s a couple of bands playing at the Giff that we might have been tempted to see, and then the promoter sneaked another one on that we would definitely see.

Right now, I have tea to drink and the laundry’s doing its thing in the machine, so I will need to hang that up when it has finished. Other than that, no plans for today until it’s time to make chicken curry for dinner.

But being an annual holiday, there are certain expectations. I doubt there’d be any tantrums, but I’d still like to do it “right” for certain values of right. And speaking of condiments, I need to remember the cranberry jelly - I forgot it last year. The world didn’t end, but I really like it myself.

OK, I really do need a shower. Off to get clean!
