Has anyone seen this? I watched the whole thing while sick in bed, and, even without all references to pot (‘Funny.[Luke Wlson] got stoned the same day Snoop Dogg was on the set’) and constant giggling and joke repetition, I’d swear the whole cast and the director were high as kites. There is one part, in the locker room after Will Ferrell’s character gets burned, when I swear I heard the click and hiss of a lighter, then a loud inhale. Am I crazy? Did anyone else notice this?
I’m not going anywhere, people. Not until I hear from someone who was there at the sound studio and saw them lighting up.
There was some weird babble at one point about ‘poking holes in the closet’ and ‘catching a flight to colorado’- inside jokes or weird hippie drug references?
That’d sounds hilarious. I need to watch that.
They could have been simulating the behavior and sound effects as a gag. In my own experience, this sort of thing was common shtick over the headsets in the theater; the folks backstage had to listen to the people in the booth pretending to toke up. Besides, not all commentary tracks are taken seriously; ever heard the one with This is Spinal Tap?
And who’s going to listen to the commentary for Old School and expect a serious discussion of filmmaking techniques, anyway? “In this scene, the operator using the handheld camera had to stand outside the tub of lubricating gel and use a long lens to simulate a closeup, because he kept losing his footing and smacking the girls in the boobs.” Well, actually, that might be kind of funny after all…
I’ve always considered the commentary to Old School to be one of the best on any DVD. The actors are talking about the movie; they don’t wander off on pointless anecdotes; they don’t step on each others lines; they don’t trash people (or brownnose); they improvise well; and they’re generally amusing to listen to. No way could they have done all of the above while stoned.
If you want to hear a commentary from someone who’s genuinely high, listen to Jason Mewes on any Kevin Smith commentary; he rambles, he’s incoherent, he’s confused, and is some cases, he literally wanders off set or falls asleep. Cheech and Chong to the contrary, there’s nothing amusing about listening to someone’s who’s stoned.
When I read the title of this thread my first thought was “oh yeah that was fucked up I think they were all high” but then I slowly realized I don’t remember any Old School commentary. I’m thinking of the Shallow Hal commentary where they just spent the whole time saying, “there’s Sally So-and-So she play’s golf with Harry Such-and-Such who did the sound, there’s a funny story about her but I’m not going to get into it… oh if you look real quick there’s Ned my dentist! And interesting story about this scene is HEY that’s Martha in the corner she’s my accountant’s neice…” I watched the whole thing. Not sure why.
What’s extra stupid is that now I want to rent Old School again to see the commentary. I loved that movie.
Well yeah, Jason Mewes leaves the commentary track recording session (no pun intended) several times to shoot up. I imagine heroin would have a slightly greater effect than marijuana.
IMO, it’s quite likely they are high, though I don’t have much to base that on.
In what commentary track does Mewes shoot up in?
I just realized that one of them could just be lighting a normal cigarette. It’ somewhat conceivable.
No. No, wait. They just made a joke about their nicknames for Luke Wilson’s eyes/eyebrows- for the eighth time!
I think the worst DVD commentary evar is Big Trouble In Little China. John Carpenter and Kurt Russell do the commentary, and they waste the whole movie catching up on old times, how’s the wife and kids, etc. Who the hell cares how Goldie’s doing! That ain’t commentary!
