Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 73 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 88 with rain off and on. We shall see. It’s laundry day and the excitatement is almost more than I can stand. Other than that, stayin’ inside and dry is the plan of the day. Sup will be grilled ribeyes, baked N.O.T., sallit, and cheesey garlic bread due to a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for steak.
What do you call birds that stick together?
Vel-crows
What does a zombie vegetarian eat?
GRRRAAAIIINNNSSS!
What is the most terrifying word in nuclear physics?
OOPS!
Cookie yay for Sadie! Glad you figured out the problem.
doggio well, it does look like a good place to floozy.
lucky hope the tweens calmed down.
Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah.
While working at a zoo, where a lot of animals get fed whole rodents and similar for a more natural diet, frozen ‘micicles’, or ‘mice pops’ were a popular treat in hot weather. For animals, not for staff.
The temperature has definitely dropped here the last few days, today it’s not even sunny, just cool and overcast. I’m irking from home again, to facilitate the swearing and pacing.
I am being annoyed at one of my squash plants; the thing is huge and covered in flowers… all male. So far it’s not given me a single squash, but it’s taking up a load of space in the tunnel, which is not very big, even shading out other plants which are giving me food. I can’t quite bring myself to rip it out, because it’s so impressive, but… *Glares at plant*
We’re starting the day with 62 Ferrets, but it could reach the low 90s this afternoon. Dammit. I plan to finish prepping the dirt patch for grass seed. There are still a few lilies and and tree starts and weeds that need to be removed, then I can redistribute and smooth the dirt. I’m thinking about getting some of those rolls that are grass seed/fertilizer/mulch all in one, but I fear a certain idiot canine will drag it around the yard, so maybe I’ll just get the separate components.
Speaking of idiot canine, last week, I got him a couple of toys that are supposedly for aggressive chewers. As a bonus, they will bounce in random directions when dropped or thrown. I watched Otis play with one by himself in the yard and he seemed to really enjoy it. But a couple of days later, both were gone. Then he brought the orange one back inside. Well, yesterday I found the blue one behind an azalea. So yay! And so far, he hasn’t damaged either one.
Other plan for today is a run to Food Lion and Aldi. Or maybe I’ll wait till the new sale prices kick in tomorrow. FCD is out of 'nanners, but maybe he can survive one more day…
Speaking of Food Lion, plus a few other stores, I can’t figure out why, when I pull up their pages, they’ll give me info about stores in Massachusetts or North Carolina or Oklahoma or other equally far places. You’d think they’d cookie me when I set my zip code. This week, it gives me the deals for South Boston, including beer and wine, which aren’t sold in grocery stores in MD. I input my address in the account and I chose my current store, but nothing changes. Weird…
Nut - my cucumber plant has let me down. It had lots of flowers and so far, I’ve gotten 6 cukes, with 3 more almost ready to pick. But most of the flowers disappeared without doing anything! I wonder if the overnight storms just beat their spirit down. I do have a gazillion itty bitty green cherry 'maters - a few ripened and I ate them but they weren’t particularly good. Maybe the plant food I chose wasn’t right? I’ll try something else next year.
OK, time to finish surfing before donning grubbies in the hopes of finishing my yard work before it gets too hot.
Morning all. Didn’t post last night for the simple reason that after climbing through a cave I spent 8 hours at Cedar Point in 85F heat so by the time I got back to my room around 9pm I was battered, burned and just conscious. Today and tomorrow will be easier, short drives and nothing to active planned.
swampy, yes, I did take my hearing aids off and put them in a case in my fanny pack. Some of the more … vigorous… rides made me put all my stuff in a locker, since going straight up (and down) 420 feet at 120mph can toss unsecured stuff about…
Ok, pancakes are assimilated and car is loaded so off I go to my old home area for a bit Take care all.
Maintenance said the dripping is from the pipe sweating. They cant stop that so will put a tray or bucket under; not much is dripping anyway.
This will stop in Oct or Nov when the a/c will be shut off for the season.
New bathroom sink faucet is a great improvement.
Off to orientation.
Maybe 88 degrees today.
The reverse here–all female blossoms. My lovely wife was able to find a scraggly little squash with a male flower after visiting several nurseries, and we’re coddling it to see if we can get at least a few fertilizations. Sort of like the Harlan Ellison short story “A Boy and His Dog,” but different.
Up, unsheveled, not heaving, merely serving as a cat-warmer, and sending good vibes to all, JtC especially.
I must go into Portland with its 90 expected ferrets today, yuck. Though I’ll be giving an author talk at a book club and eating tapas, so there’s that. First food out of the house/at an event = fun learning about managing the dental appliances.
Had a friend named Ilene. I’ve lost touch with her. Will have to reach out.
I loved your stoopid jokes. Great way to start the morning!
To tell the truth I was very annoyed when I opened my personal computer because earlier I opened my work laptop that lives here at home to see if the credit card payments had been properly processed through the software through to the credit card processor company. Well, nothing showed for 7/10 or 7/11 or 7/12 but 7/13 showed thousands more than the amount of credit card payments on 7/13. So, I’m thinking that the payments for all 4 days were batched together. Except we are supposed to record transactions for each day separately. So, now I’ll have to record shortages on 7/10, 7/11 and 7/12 and a huge overage for 7/13. Will need to prepare and submit extra paperwork to show how the discrepancy came about. Blank my life.
But now that I’ve giggled/laughed at your stoopid jokes, I’m smiling and in a good mood again. Thank you very much swampy. ps. My favorite was the ball for the dog. Hahahaha.
I’ll have to share that with Hubs when he gets up around noon. Ha
I’ve only tasted shine one time. I attended the Southern Ruck at the Nahtahala Outdoor Center in NC in 2008 IMS. One morning we had a choice of activities and I chose to go on a 7ish mile hike on the AT. The driver who was taking us to the trailhead had a bottle of shine. He offered it to me and I had a drink. It was flavored and oh my goodness, was it delicious!
I might be dense or just an Accountant with a minimal sense of humor but there are some that are just going whoosh, straight over my head. Like the bunny saying s/he’s a Type O or the patio furniture one. Never mind about the rabbit one; I just said it out loud and now I get it. Duh.
oopsy love the shirts/bracelet that you bought for BFF family; I’m sure they’ll really like them.
So, our department has had different leadership over the years. Normally it was a director and a deputy director. But in 2019 when the deputy retired, only an assistant director was hired, then a year or two later another assistant director was promoted from being a supervisor so there were 2 assistants and no deputy. The promoted assistant transferred to a different department after 2 years and a new assistant was promoted from supervisor. Well with the new fiscal year, it was decided to only have a deputy and no assistants. The most recently promoted assistant was promoted to deputy and the other assistant was banished to a different department, he’s the one who was originally hired to replace the retiring deputy so he had 7 years of experience in the position while the other assistant only had about 2 years experience as assistant. So, the guys were told Friday afternoon, the one getting the deputy position was told mid afternoon while the other guy didn’t get the news until late afternoon. He was supposed to stay on for 2 weeks to share needed info with the guy being promoted but he came in on Sunday when no one was in the office and cleaned out his office. He left his office and building keys on a hook in the office with a keychain dangling from it that had a middle finger on it. Needless to say he is not happy with the decision.
The Mitten is back under the heat dome; yesterday was high of 94F and today it’s supposed to go up to 98F so I’ll be driving to work today. Supposed to continue in the 90s for rest of week.
same with ours but I’ve only picked 1 cuke and only 1 more has started growing and there’s dozens of flowers. Heck.
coppertone best wishes for orientation going well and that you like your new job and co-workers and management!
ok, finally caught up. need to shevel and get to work. Then I’ll go to Kroger to get some raisin whole wheat English muffins, they’re BOGO which ends today. Then I’m hoping to go to the sports store and purchase some swim goggles.
Take care All, drive safe and stay cool and hydrated!
It’s Tuesday morning. I had vague plans for getting out early for a ride on my recumbent trike before it got unreasonably hot. Alas, it was not to be. Today, we also have an ozone warning, which means asthmatic codgers like me should stay inside. It’s 70 Fing degrees now, and later we’ll get 93, with a heat index of Fing 101.
My watch is updated, bringing echoes of Tom Petty’s Century City.
Did you hear the one about…oh, you did? Pretty good joke, wasn’t it? I’ve got your nose! Oh, wait, it’s only my thumb.
What does a dyslexic zombie eat? Brians!
Mrs. Nott has gone to the med lab for blood tests. The note said it was a fasting test, but nothing medical is ever fast.
Good morning! It was 73ºF for our walk this morning. I almost snoozed the walking alarm this morning. I’m glad I didn’t. I would have missed this:
I went and had dinner with Maggie from the MTTA last night. I’m glad I did. We discussed our marriages. They and I are in very similar situations. We both love our wives very much and want our marriages to work. Their wife, Vickie, would like to meet Mrs Magill. As I’ve said before, there is no support system for partners of trans folks. I also experimented with presentation - nothing too dramatic - just leggings, a long tee-shirt, my pride shoes, and a cute anklet. I was rocking my late nineties look, as Mrs Magill has called it.
On the way there, on the curve I’d drifted around last week, I saw someone who was not so fortunate as I. There was a car sitting vertically in the ditch. They obviously were not paying attention and drove off the side of the road. Tennessee has taken the position that shoulders are for wimps, and many of our more rural roads will have an immediate five foot plunge off the side. Stay off your phones, folks. I’ll have to see if I can get some frames from the dashcam. It was impressive.
Boofae I’m jealous of your weather. That’s perfect top down weather.
fcm Hopefully the toys will keep Otis engaged and out of trouble.
Coppertone I would ask maintenance if the could put some insulation on the pipe. That would solve two issues: First the sweating would stop, and the A/C would be more effective because the coolant would be cooler when it gets to the heat exchanger. The bigger issue is that coolant pipes usually start sweating and frosting up when the coolant is low. I would encourage you to step outside when the A/C is running and see if the air compressor is banging or otherwise being extremely loud.
I had to read this three times to figure it out.
I told my wife she should embrace her mistakes. She gave me a hug.
Otis will be 2 in October - with luck he’ll me mostly out of the puppy stage.
HAHAHAHA!! I made a funny joke!!!
I only managed a bit over an hour today - the temp leapt from 62 to 76 in less than 3 hours! But I got the area almost completely prepped for grass seed/clover. We need a small load of topsoil (just one scoop) to level it, plus to fill in Otis pits. I did get pretty much all the weeds up and I’ve got a container of lilies to plant out front. I also ringed the clematis with liriope and found enough border pieces to contain it. So yay there! When we get the topsoil, I may move the border out a few inches.
And lesson learned - spray insect repellent all the way up to my shorts. I barely went above my knees and some bloodthirsty critter(s) got me in 4 places on the back of my legs between knees and shorts. Dammit. Now I know.
Question for Nut or any other plant person - will roots without leaves above ground for the whole photosynthesis thing still produce plants (weeds)? The noxious invasive weeds that I was pulling have a very impressive root network, stretching thither and yon below ground before popping up. I did my best to get as much root as I could. And henceforth, I’ll yank the nasties up as soon as they appear. But will the roots continue to plague me or will decapitating them stop the spread? Curses upon whoever dragged them into this country.
Anyway, I’m de-crudded and about to have a sammich. And once FCD gets back from the marina, I’ll make a run to the grocery stores for the few things we need. Then, who knows…
There’s also potential for water damage to walls, flooring, and such. My building’s maintenance considers water where it shouldn’t be a top-priority urgent matter to be dealt with ASAP.
Chloé has decided I’m too slow to change into an outside appropriate top before I take her out, and has started sitting outside Spike’s bedroom door and yipping while the guy is trying to sleep. I’ve put up the baby gate.
Yanno, maybe if she wouldn’t wait until it’s a potty emergency before she deigns to come downstairs to my office…
It depends on the plants- if they have chonky roots then often yes, they can store enough energy in the roots to regrow once or even a couple of times without needing more light. Houttuynia does produce rhizomes- thick storage roots- so yeah, sorry, it will come back from any bits of those you missed. If you keep checking back and take out any shoots as soon as you can it will kill it eventually, but I don’t know how long eventually will be for that.
On the plus side, you can eat it (assuming your ID is correct and it’s not actually something deadly, in which case you can’t eat it, at least not more than once).
I’ll post you a bag of pollen.
I should actually try cooking the flowers, just all the recipes I can find are for deep fried ones and that’s just too much faff for a couple of flowers a day.
Unproductive day. The main computer network I needed to use wasn’t connecting like normal and I spent the morning trying to get it to work before checking my emails and finding out the whole system was down.. Typical. It’s back up now, but I’ve run out of steam.
Another day in the 90s. The living room has been renamed the death zone at 81 degrees this morning and the AC running full tilt. I went down to the recycle bin and retrieved some large cardboard boxes to cover two of the living room windows. Too late to help much today, but should help tomorrow when the sunrise hits them. The bedroom remains the coolest place in the apartment. I would bitch at management, but there isn’t much that can be done. The windows already have triple ply pleated blinds, but all that glass (they’re large windows) really results in a lot of solar gain.
Sadie is still happy with her food by the the water tank, so that’s one worry out of the way.
Not much happening today. I’ll be making a Waldorf salad this afternoon so we won’t have to heat up the kitchen for dinner.
