Inspired by the extant thread on Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight, I went hunting for some classic videos. Here’s what I’ve found so far.

The Carpenters are not really ‘oldies’ but I love them so they’re in here. Don’t you think the world lost a really beautiful voice when Karen Carpenter died? I think she has a perfect female voice; mellow, husky and sweet all at once.

I was overjoyed to find Ah, Leah by Donnie Iris online just alittle while ago. More recent then the songs in your post, but I love this song.

I’m only seventeen, so a lot of those were before my time. However, I found of video of one of my favourite songs of all time.

Also, I’ve always like the song Close To You by The Carpenters though I had never seen what they actually looked like. Karen Carpenter had an amazing voice-- it was so… so clean sounding. Clear, you know?

But, I’ve gotta say, she was one ugly woman. So fat, too. Ugh, the song was almost ruined for me 'cause they had to show her chubby face. Move over Mama Cass, there’s a new hambeast in town. I almost hate the song now that I know it was sung by such a fatty. :frowning:

I completely understand what you’re saying. Like a perfectly made bell being rung with a gentle hammer. Something I’ve only heard in one other voice (a girl I went to college with, who never did anything with it).

Yes, it’s a pity that there really hasn’t been anyone else like her since. And just to clarify, when I commented on her weight, I was just making a joke (in poor taste, obviously). In truth, the song Close To You depresses the hell out of me. Whenever I hear it I just think about how much she hated herself and how she had to deal with her psycho brother. I mean, she wasn’t gorgeous but she was very cute and it’s so sad that she was such a troubled young woman.

sigh That video brought me down more than I thought. Augh, I gotta get mind mind off it.

Yeah, she was girl-next-door cute. A singer with a unique voice, who’s also the drummer of the band, for god’s sake. Amazing.

I’d have done a line or two with her, and held her hair back while she made herself puke.
