What 5-speed manual transmissions are available for the OldsV8?
Must be a BOP (Buick/Olds/Pontiac/Cadillac) bolt pattern.
NOT ALL bop trannys are interchangable with all bop motors: the starter motor could be on the left or right side of the motor, depending on the GM division.
(And I don’t know what side the Olds motor has  )
I think it’s the bellhousing, not the transmission that has to match the B-O-P bolt pattern and allow for starter positioning. I believe the transmission just has to have the right input shaft (stuff like shaft diameter and spline count), along with physically fitting into the car (unless you’re willing to hack the transmission tunnel) and being strong enough to take the engine’s power.
Here are some 5-speeds at Summit Racing (I did a search for ‘oldsmobile’ ‘manual’ ‘transmission’).
A quick glance at the list seems to show that most of them are either a Richmond aftermarket design or T-5 transmissions and their derivatives (like the TKO and the T-56).
I was hoping for parts availability at the local junkyard.
Is it possible to simply take the gearbox from a chevy/gmc s-10/s-15 or perhaps a camaro or firebird with a stick, and simply swap the bellhousing from a GM FWD car?
This is assuming the shafts are the correct diameter and the splines mate.
For salvage parts, I’m pretty sure all V8 5-speed Camaros and Firebirds are T-5 transmissions and all V8 6-speed Camaros and Firebirds are T-56 transmissions. I believe the truck T-5’s have the shifter in a different location than the car transmissions. I don’t understand why you mentioned a front-wheel-drive bellhousing. Is there a specific vehicle you want to put this in? Does it already have an Olds V8 or is this a swap?
Okay, heres the project.
I’m making a Junkyard Special…AMC Pacer, Olds 350 diesel, 5-speed manual, and a pair of turbos from Chrysler four bangers ( K-cars and the like). I figure, for a thousand or so bucks I can put together a vehicle that’ll get 35 mpg.
Ultimately, I’d like to bolt on an AWD transfer case from a Chevy Astrovan, plus the front axle from an AMC Eagle: this car beat out the Audi Quattro as the first AWD car on the road in modern times.
