Oliphants in Return of the King: how big?

The original novel expressly said that they were far larger than modern elephants, so the movie wasn’t taking liberties there. Still, just how big were those damn things? While stomping horses and riders, the bottoms of their feet looked to be about five to six feet across! Any info on what their dimensions are supposed to be?

And I was wondering if any creature really could be that big. My Googling turned up Argentinosaurus as the most massive sauropod, with an estimated weight pushing 100 tons; but unfortunately there are no complete skeletons so I don’t know if Argentinosaurus was as big as the oliphants were depicted.
