I was reading this article about Oliver Stone’s 9/11 movie and some comments that survivors of victims of the tragedy had regarding “reverence”, honesty, truth, etc. http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/11/03/film.sept11.movie.ap/index.html
“I think they need to be factual. It’s too close in people’s minds,” Wolf said. “‘Based on a true story’ should not happen here.”
I understand the wound is still raw, particularly for those people who lost someone close to them. However, I don’t understand why people would insist on a factual film (which, apparently, Stone is interested in creating) rather than being ok with any artist’s interpretation of the event and how it would affect any fictitious situation an artist would want to create. I guess it sort of seems like the direct survivors are trying to “own” the incident and would, if they could, tell the rest of the world how to interpret it. The truth is based in each of our own realities and how we reacted to this horrendous act. Do these people have a right to expect a certain treatment of the tragedy?
