- This is something I remember reading about a looong time ago, so it’s pretty sketchy, but I thought that organized freediving was basically illegal.
I seem to remember that lots of people went down but didn’t come back up, and the last year it was an international event, the #2 and #3 world-ranked guys both died. Various governments got into various uproars, and all the clubs shut down to avoid legalities.
There was a TV commercial on last night showing a twenty-something girl and a caption that said “Member, US Olympic Free Diving Team” or something like that, and she says something about being 180 feet under water (the guys before were going down, like, 450 feet, so this alone tells me they might not be doing it the old-fashioned way). It showed her swimming downwards without the weight/meter thingy; did they get rid of that part?

don’t know, my WAG it is done outside the bounds of conuntries that outlaw it. we might have clubs that orginize such freediving trips just into international waters
Free-diving sounds absolutely nuts to me. Why not simplify the sport? Tie a belt around the person’s chest, tell them to take a deep breath, and then start tightening the belt. When they start to turn blue, you stop the clock and loosen the belt.
Pretty much the same effect, but no fatalities.
