Olympic swimming: Is Phelps kind of a dick?

Phelps isn’t a dick, but the more I watch him, the more he looks like a Ferengi to me.

Which brings about the rather unpleasant contemplation of Ferengi dick…
Also, I have seem him loose numerous times (obviously not recently) and he was always a good loser, congratulating the winner and not storming off the deck like certain Serbians claiming he really won the race, and would surely win if the raced again now.
That’s a mischaracterization of how Cavic acted. He did, in fact, congratulate Phelps and was very gracious about it on his blog and in interviews. He has not contested the results, said that he wanted the protest dropped, told reporters “I did not beat Michael Phelps,” and said he was happy just to win the silver. I thinkCavic has actually been pretty classy. I don’t see a problem with him saying if they raced again, he feels like he could win. He damn near won the first time. I think it’s just a natural reaction of an athlete to want to do it again.

According to Wikipedia, he has already made $5 million in endorsements. To put that in perspective if you graduate from college at 22 making $45,000 a year with an average of 5% increases until you retire at 65, you will have earned about $6.5 million over your entire lifetime.
Per year. He makes $5 million per year in endorsements. He has for a few years and he will for a few more years. Michael Phelps will basically never want for money unless he develops a drug or gambling addiction.
This is a misleading comparison. Even assuming the $5m is before tax and he only had $3m left, you can invest that and follow standard advice and withdraw 4% in year one and increase by inflation each year and you are very unlikely to run out of money. That gives him the equivalent of $120k/yr in today’s money.
This is true, however I was keeping it simple.

Although for that kind of money, he has to be the best in the world at what he is doing, while I’m just ok at it.
Well, maybe they will, if he’s smart. That still doesn’t excuse being a dick because the other kids teased you when you were 11.

I hope the article is biased, and he really isn’t still harboring that grudge.

Maybe it’s a bit personal for me, but I was on the swim team at 11, and by that age I was already wearing coke-bottle glasses and couldn’t even see when swimming. I had to count my strokes to know where the wall was before a turn, and I still made it to state championships by 14. So I don’t have much sympathy for a kid who got picked on because of his ears for a couple years.

Phelps is cute, and I can’t believe he ever got picked on that much.
You obviously weren’t picked on like I was picked on. The only reason I’m as well adjusted as I am is I saw one of my tormentors bagging groceries at Costco. She obviously hadn’t as fared as well as I.

But it took 15 years to get over it.

If this is true then I’m pretty :dubious: about how “well adjusted” you actually are. If it’s a joke, carry on.

Nope it was a pretty traumatic period of time. Bemused all you want, you weren’t there, you didn’t live it, and you can’t imagine the damage it did to my confidence.

As far as how ‘well adjusted’ I am as a result. I can guarangoddamntee you I will not permit the same thing to happen to my children. How’s that for making lemonaid?

No Michael Phelps did not come across as a dick in that article. He came across as a normal dude who found a good outlet for his frustrations in winning swimming competitions. Go Michael Phelps, good job!

The article didn’t portray him as a dick either. It was a normal character piece, trying to get the impression of a guy through some tiny little snippets.

If you think he sounded like a Dick, I think you’re reading way too much into it, holding him to an impossibly high standard just because he’s famous.

olivesmarch4th and Michael, sittin’ in a tree . . .

Nah. He just really inspires me. Also he’s a Wolverine. Gotta have a little bit of school pride.

I’m surprised nobody has yet mentioned how he gave up his racing spot to Ian Crocker in the Athens Olympics for the 4x100m relay. Phelps beat Crocker fair and square in the 100 fly and automatically qualified to race in the 4x100. But he’d already won so many gold medal races he decided to step back and give his teammate a chance to win gold. Crocker went on to win his team the gold in World Record time. How’s that for being a team player?

I was going to post that myself. I just wish I could find the actual clip of the race.
