Omaha Steak's Regular Burgers: Opinions?

I received a big box of Omaha Steak’s frozen steaks and burgers for a Christmas present (I don’t think they were the gourmet burgers). The steaks were fine, but the burgers were truly awful. The best word to describe them in my opinion is “vile”. Their taste and smell put me indelibly in mind of vending machine burgers from an ill-serviced, seldom visited truck stop at the ass end of nowhere.

If you’ve tried them, what do you think? I understand that things like the amount of fat in them strongly affects their taste, but for something to taste this bad from a company with a good reputation like Omaha Steaks puzzles me.

On several BBQ boards I have been known to hang out at, Omaha Steaks are thought of about as highly as Bose stereo equipment at an audiophile convention.
You can get better meat for less money at a local butcher, or at Whole Foods.

When I was running out of gift ideas from my boyfriend one time, I caved and did an Omaha gift package at the last minute. He’s way more of a carnivore than I am, but he liked all of their products just fine. Never had an issue with the burgers, maybe you got a bad batch?

I’ve had their burgers on numerous occasions and every time they have been fine. I guess you just got an unlucky bad batch.

Moving thread from IMHO to Cafe Society.

As a Conrad Johnson aficionado kind of guy, that’s pretty bad. But these burgers are more the equivalent of damaged Radio Shack quality rather than Bose. But that negative view is much more in line with my experience than the more positive views here in this thread.

I agree. That’s what I normally do, but most if not all fast-food burgers are even much better than these stinkburgers. They may be a bad batch, but that seems fairly unlikely. In any case, I don’t intend to order more to find out…

Goddamn, am I gonna be the only one who read the headline as “Obama’s Steak’s…” and wondered what the hell the OP was on about?

I’ve had them and for frozen burgers, they are far and away better than anything else. They also better than the fresh meat I’ve used for burgers. I’ve never been disappointed in anything from Omaha Steaks (other than their constant marketing).

Gotta agree with Rick.

Overpriced and below average quality. I can get better stuff localy for 1/2 the price.

I love their burgers. In fact, I’m making them for dinner tonight.

The quality is good, but why would anyone pay top dollar for frozen meat, unless you live in the outback?

I live in Omaha, and I drive past the headquarters of Omaha Steaks almost every day. I buy most of my meat at a small butcher shop a few blocks from Omaha Steaks.

I don’t know that there is any good reputation. They’ve hustled and advertised (God, have they advertised) their way into being well-known, that’s all.

Their “premium steaks” are Choice, not Prime. And they’re very cagy about admitting so. That’s about all you need to know about whether to take them seriously as “premium” meat purveyors.

I won a gift certificate, used it to buy some steaks during a big sale, and got the burgers as a free bonus.

I would never spend my own money on them, but I’ve gotten them as gifts a couple times, and I’ve always appreciated it. It’s not super great meat, but it’s good meat, and good meat is unfortunately not THAT easy to get up here in New England.

Never had any trouble with the burgers, either, though I’ve never thought they were as good as the steaks (or as relatively superior to my local supermarket as the steaks are).
