Omigod, I'm British!

Well technically if there’s two of you then the first two rounds…

I always thought the whole “first round’s on me” didn’t make sense.

It’s meant to mean I’ll buy you a drink but in a round you get one bought back for you because that’s what a round is.

Just rambling, ignore me.

Whereabouts in Yorkshire? Hey! That’s my hometown!

George Harrison’s last ever gig was at a meeting of the George Formby Society bash.

Not a lot of people know that.

While My Ukelele Gently Weeps went down a storm, I bet.

Tish! banjolele if you don’t mind. (Paul McCartney played “Something” on a ukelele at Harrison’s memorial gig - it was suprisingly good).

Yeah, I saw that on telly - I didn’t think I liked Something all that much, and I’m not a Macca fan at all, but that version was really good. I also liked the Joe Brown ukelele/banjobollocks/whatever bit at the end.

Whoa, there buddy! Fer a Brit, you dang sure got our number! But, you left out McDonald’s, infomercials, and SUVs. Why, the most important thang in my entarr life is ma SUV. If somebody stole it, I’d be pigbiting mad! I forgive ya though. Yer country’s still larnin. One day, when it’s as old as the US of A, you’ll be as smart as us!

—The bizarre point of the OP (did you read it?) was that the poll was taken in Britain, asking Britons what they thought made them British! So don’t go blaming us Morbidly Obese inbred Rednecks!

(retyping reply lost to the hamsters)

I’m an Irish Catholic American…brought up in a sub-culture that taught that the British were imperialistic snobs founded in conquest and exploitation…certainly true for Ireland and India. The fact that the Irish and English did not accept the dominion of their masters was infuriating, and actually achieving independence was a slap in the face.

The Germans are understandable: they caused two (or more over there?) wars.

Hatred of the French…well, its trendy to hate them.
Being a protestant nation by and large, and having religeon tied up into nationalism, Great Britain saw catholics as different, therefore wrong, therefore evil…incidentally, a contempt not unknown by Protestants on this side of the pond.

Hindus, being pagans, were on the same level as Catholics.
Foxes are vermin fit only to be exterminated.

Sorry if my earlier statements came across as prejudicial…old ingrained beliefs die hard…

…even when they’re wrong. :frowning:

Make that Irish and Indians.

Doncaster, where my mother was from. All the living members of her family are still living around there.

Well I grew up in south London, the daughter of Irish parents and with a very Irish surname. And boy did I suffer because of that, the Irish were hated. That country never did a thing for me so I got the fuck out as soon as I could, but forgot the leave the goddamn accent behind me so all I hear every single fucking day is (ironically) “I just love your accent”. I only go there to visit my family otherwise I wouldn’t be bothered to ever see the place again, good riddance!

My mum moved to England from Irland when she was 18, accompanied by her Irsh accent and Irish last name. She has sinse lost both, but no one ever had a problem with her because she was Irish. My Grandmother still has an Irish accent, and has never suffered because of it. I’m suprised you had such problems.

I grew up in the 70’s when there were alot of IRA bombings and there was alot of anti-Irish feeling - didn’t matter if you were from the north or south, most English didn’t know the difference. And apart from the nasty comments and Irish jokes, we had a brick through our window and “Irish pigs” written on our front wall. I know the sentiment towards the Irish has changed now but it’s too late.

In saying all that, I have to admit that I do listen to Capital Radio every day over the Internet (just for the traffic reports, mind you!)

Not necessarily for the better.

Parmalat has a line of UHT milk which is available in pretty much every US supermarket I’ve been in… Publix, Albertsons’, Winn-Dixie, Super Wal*Mart… hell, I saw it in a Piggly Wiggly in South Carolina I think…

…It’s gotta be right with Hammerite, any any any old iron

Been a LONG time since I’d heard that one.

So what are we saying here? That being British is subject to context and perspective? Well, duh!

I know I am stating the bleedin’ obvious – but for Christ-sake people – get a life.

Virtually all Brits consider themselves superior to all other nations – we are basically cool and everyone else can kiss our arses…

Nevertheless – nearly all Americans that post to SDMB are atypical. Whoever heard of an American who knew that Wales was a country and not a throng of aquatic mammals? I love this place and I love the people who populate it (mostly)

FWIW I love the “English” Breakfast, and I love sarcasm and irony. But who gives a feck what I think. That’s the point isn’t it? Being British means allowing for difference of culture and of point of view and it is when I see this being eroded that I get cross.

Yanks: get a life – you are not cool and you never will be. Tough life – you are the most powerful nation in the world and so we, the little countries, will always be down on you. Nevertheless, as Superpowers go – you offend the least – by a long way (usually). If you want to be respected try this: embrace diversity (from the American ideal I mean), ditch the religion.

Just my two cents.

Please try not to jump on me – I am just the bearer of bad news – I do respect you really… xxx

sigh As we say over here, you’re preaching to the choir:) (at least in terms of the Americans on the SDMB). If only it were that simple. An atheist simply cannot hope to win major elective office in the US.

I am really looking forward to my visit to England and Wales next month - and one of the reasons is to visit a society in which religion doesn’t play such a prominent role. Oz and NZ were refreshing in this manner.

Let the wiretaps begin!

I guess I’m about as American as they get. Everyone keeps talking about George Formby and all can think is “Oh, yes! my mom has one of his grills and just loves it!”
