Omnibus World Football Thread 2020-2022 (edited)

I think so, yes.

Ooooo yikes.
We shouldn’t be mentioning '70 around a ‘certain poster’.
:face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Thinking about this, are you sure that Pep Guardiola/Spain invented that style? see this (by no means the first) example from 2006:

Currently watching Inter Miami vs LA FC featuring 4 UCL winners. Messi is fired up. Very pleased with him not just treating this like a vacation as some stars have done, albeit less common than early in the league.

He may be taking it as a vacation, the man genuinely loves playing football, if they didn’t pay him for it, he would play anyway.

Back in the day Youri Djorkaeff took a vacation from his vacation and missed a game without telling anyone, to go visit his family. And Busquets is playing hard, but he’s very cynical about fouling and general shittery, knowing that the refs are hesitant to throw out the exBarca guys.

I’m sure Messi went to Miami in part for non-soccer reasons, just glad he’s still taking the soccer part seriously. Suarez too. He’s a douche, obviously, but it’s inline with the rest of his career unlike Busquets.

Looking forward to the club world cup this summer, although Just making it out of the group is about all they could hope for.

Best headline I’ve seen in a long time, for a story about Liverpool’s clinching the PL title with a 5-1 win over Tottenham:

“Heroic Spurs Crush Arsenal’s Title Hopes”

Again! They did the same thing last season, albeit in a much closer race. Son failing to convert a one-one that could very well have given the title to Arsenal.

Is anyone watching Barca-Inter? Seems to be a crazy game, 3-3 at the moment. I’m only following it online, but kicker.de has videos of the goals, and you couldn’t choose which one was the best because they were all so beautiful.

I am. Yamal’s had two off the post that both would have been better than his goal. And his goal was phenomenal.

Welp, tied heading back to Italy. Both teams are in the domestic title races, but Barca are playing by far the worst team in La Liga and have a 4 point lead over Real Madrid (they still play each other so Barca picking up all the points in the remaining games is still super important) so resting a lot of people might be tempting.

Missed Barça-Inter live, but YouTube shows some impressive moves and goals. Will go to my favourite bar next tuesday hoping for the best.

Meanwhile: Manolo “el del Bombo”, that is, Manolo, the one with the big drum, loud supporter of the Spanish football team in ten World Cups, eight Europe Cups and countless qualifying and friendly games, has died aged 76.

I remember him well. He was so famous and popular that Borussia Mönchengladbach spanned their own Manolo, the Turkish immigrant Ethem Özerenler. Borussia is my club, so he’s also in my memories and I was sad when he died in 2008.

Barca resting 10 of their 11 starters from midweek. Hopefully it works out.

Will ter Stegen definitely return?

He’s on the team sheet. It’ll be good for him to get some game time, although I think barring injury he’s the backup for the rest of the season.

I hope he will still get some practice in the Primera Division, because we (Germans) hope for him for the Nations League final four. I’m selfish, or should I say, even patriotic, that way

Barca’s up 4 on RM with 5 league matches left, one of which is against RM. If they win out, the final 2 games of the season will me meaningless, so I’d expect him to play then. If Barca drop any points it’ll likely come down to the wire.

RM could make it easier and lost tomorrow though.

After five minutes ter Stegen had to pick the ball from the back of the net. Barça is getting in the habit of starting matches conceding goals at the beginning and having to fight uphill. It may be psychologically rewarding when it works, but it is also tiring. Still 1:0 for Valladolid after 30 minutes. Ansu Fati is a shadow of his former self, such a pity!

What a shit half. Ter Stegen didn’t have anything to do with the goal, but unfortunate. Valladolid is the worst defense in La Liga history and there’s still >10% of the games left, but Barca haven’t created much at all.

Before this game, they were probably like 90% to win the league. If they lose it’s probably like 60%. Probably Raphinha, Olmo, and Torres come on and they win, but Barca wanted them to rest + more of an injury possibility so that’s still not ideal.

Yeah. I thought giving him the 10 was silly at the time, but he was showing a lot of promise. Him wearing it now with two attacking Ballon d’Or candidates on the team is a joke.
