Omnibus World Football Thread 2020-2022 (edited)

I bet they wish they had signed a certain psycho goalkeeper who knows a thing or two about penalties…

That’s OK, they still have European football to look forward to this year

I’m starting to feel sorry for Man Utd fans. I’ve been joking about this for ten years, but it’s finally happening for real.

Sure, but the Board will blame the coach before they blame themselves, even if he might’ve been right.

Feel sorry for the real fans. Don’t feel sorry for the glory hunters who started supporting them in the 90s because they were the best. Laugh at them!

And sooner or later the real fans will be rewarded, no drought lasts forever and when it rains again the feeling is… divine.
Something the glory hunters will never know because they are gone chasing another flavor of the month team.

The people I know (mostly classmates and friends from Pakistan born in 1960s) have been following English (& Scottish ) football since the 1970s when we started getting ONE match broadcast on TV and some newspaper coverage.

Man United had the most fans, but we also have die hard West Ham, Aston Villa and even QPR fans.

I don’t know a single one who has changed allegiance in the last 40 years.

So we’re good.

Fair point - the Man Utd ‘fans’ of the 90s probably wear Man City shirts these days!

Probably a bit different to the fans I had in mind. Growing up in the 90s half my class seemed to ‘support’ Man Utd rather than the local team (Ipswich).

Crap. @iamatractorboy beat me to the punch!

Not that second teamers or lower shouldn’t win, but I imagine that wasn’t the Man U first team? Even in the real cup competition teams usually don’t play starters until later in the tournament.

Exciting moments in the MLS leagues cup final as the Seattle Sounders beat (3-0) an inter Miami team that includes Messi and Suárez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, and Rodrigo de Paul. Luis Suarez then puts one of his victorious opponents in a “friendly” head lock that requires the intervention of a second player, a brawl ensues and then Suarez spits at a Seattle staff member.

Maybe inter miami will all be wearing special shirts to the next match.

One of the quickest hooks I can ever recall:

Erik ten Hag sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just three matches | Erik ten Hag | The Guardian

Not even 6 Scaramucci’s.

Too bad I missed that match. It’ll be interesting to see if MLS has any balls for a ban. Probably should be ~the rest of the season, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a slap on the wrist of ~2 games.

Apparently there was a similar case some time ago and the offender only got 3 games.
Considering Suarez past offences I think that would be far too lenient and invite more abuses.

He really is a piece of work isn’t he

I suspect he has some deep psychological issues and needs therapy.

Reading into it a bit more and it looks like MLS might rely on the fact that it was a not a league match and allow the League Cup competition to handle any punishment. And there’s a decent chance Suarez isn’t around next year so it wouldn’t matter anyway.

On the other hand, Cristian Arango was suspended last year for harassment (details not publicized) by the MLS, and his suspension extended into their first League Cup match. I’d guess that was via cooperation, but I wonder if a reverse direction could also occur.

ETA actually, maybe not coordination…I suspect the MLS has control over squads in some sense, regardless of what they’re doing.

Well at least LS didn’t bite anyone.
