…which one is the best? When you’re making up a scale to rate something, whatever it happens to be, which one do you consider the best end? One? Or Ten?
Usually 10. But every so often it’s 1.
Ten.

Ten. Did you ever hear someone described as a “perfect 1”?
Eleven is better.
The joke that keeps on giving.

Agreed - mostly 10.
But if you’re in the ‘top ten’, you’re not ‘number 1’ (or you’d have been number 1)
If I want my refrigerator to be colder, do I turn the dial to a higher or a lower number?
Ten is a 10. No 10 for one.
I went 10 although it isn’t always the best; more like most extreme. Such as when the doctor asks me to rate the pain on a scale of one to ten.
I had a receptionist once who could not grasp the concept of the thermostat.
She’d be “too hot” or “too cold” and would have to ask someone which way to move the thermostat. And you couldn’t use “left” or “right” with her because she would then hold up her hands and ask “which is left?”
I hate that one, too. Usually, the dial is helpfully marked at the extremes “high” and “low”, which clarifies matters not at all. Does that mean that “low” is “low temperature”, or does it mean that “high” is “high amount of cooling”? If you’re going to put words on the thing, make the words say “more cold” and “less cold”.
To be Devil’s advocate, I’m surprised this is so lopsided since lists almost always count down to one.
No it’s not.
If it’s a scale, 10 is always the best (or most). That’s what “scale” means.
If it’s a “count down” or “Top 10”, 1 is the best.
I protest! Where’s the option for all the other numbers?
I prefer 6. Then, 3, then 5, then 10, then 2, then 1, then 4, then 8, then 7 then 9.
9 sucks. It knows why.
I heard someone on TV refer to the Senate Supreme Court nuclear option as going to “Defcon 10.” That made me laugh.
I’m ashamed of you, Chronos. As a physicist, you know there’s no such thing as “more cold” there is only less heat.
(There is of course an adjective “colder”.)
10 means most or highest, which is not necessarily the same thing as best. For example, rating pain on a scale of 1-10, 10 means the most painful, which is certainly not the best.
FWIW I agree I worded my question poorly. It’s not always the “best” just the peak of the scale.
Unless I turn it up to 11?
Sorry – was just watching that movie again.
