I notice that American newsmedia tend to, with some exceptions, refer to knighted actors, musicians, etc. with the honorary title “Sir.” That is, Sir Anthony Hopkins will, more often than not, be referred to as Sir Anthony Hopkins in the American press. Obviously this isn’t a requirement of law (free speech and all that); rather, it’s a nice way of giving somebody the respect they’ve earned.
However, supposing an article appears in print in the British press in which a knighted individual is not referred to as “Sir Such-n-such.” Has a crime been committed? Can the publication be held to account for this in some way (perhaps with a fine or a censure or something)?
