Chowder, Mangetout, you two were never in … The Royal Navy, were you? Because I’d heard that they’d gotten that problem pretty much under control.
My mom grew up on a farm in Arkansas. She was shooting squirrels out of trees from horseback (god I hope I got the prepositions right!) when she was 8 years old. She used to cry if she didn’t get brains. Pretty sure she wasn’t a zombie, but you can’t always tell I guess.
So that’s where I’ve been going wrong. No wonder people keep looking at me funny.

Fried squirrel was a staple at our house during the autumn when I was a young lad. Just coat them with flour and fry 'em in fat. Come to think of it, that was pretty much the recipe for everything except roast beef.
I’m wondering about the effort-to-reward ratio on this one. On the one hand, squirrels have precious little meat. On the other, they can be collected (even from my minute backyard) by the score. Of course, I can also get, from the same backyard, opossum, skunk, and raccoon, all of which are nominally eatable (for rats I have to go down the street), and all of which have more meat.
Or we could start in on the birds. There’s starlings (hey, they eat them in France), the occasional pigeon overhead…
Hmmmmm, no one’s ever complained when I’ve done this…perhaps I should start carrying persmission slips?
I made squirrel stew, once. I was given the squirrel meat by a roommate’s relations, with a much larger amount of moose meat. We made “Rocky and Bullwinkle Stew.” It was delicious.

I’m sorry; I’ve only ever seen squirrels as adorable scampery fluffy little things, or as flattened roadkill. I’ll take a salad, please.
I’ve eaten tons of 'em. Ridiculously easy to clean (or peel). Parboil for a few minutes then toss them in a crock pot with some carrots and 'taters. Yummy!
