Folks,
I am leaving in the morning for work, my new office is 1,678 miles away (according to Mapquest). Houston, Texas to Bakersfield, California, hows that for commute?. Wish me luck!.

Luck!
According to friends who live there, not a whole lot of exciting stuff to do 'round Bakersfield 'cept “munging” and “curbing” (and you don’t even want to know what those are!!!). Dopers who live around those parts - please speak up and prove me wrong, but I know it’s definitely a quieter place than Houston. The good news is that you’re now situated within a few hours drive of the ocean, mountains and desert - nature is all around; enjoy, my friend! And if you ever need anything to do in the Hell-A area, shoot me an e-mail and I’ll be glad to be your guide!
Hope all goes well with your move and the new office! Welcome to Cal-if-or-nye-ay, land of shakes and newly ruled by the one-and-only Governator!

Well, at least you’ll be close to Sequoia Park, and a bit farther down the road is Yosemite. Don’t miss the eastern slope of the Sierras, too - over the summit east from B’field, then north on 395 will get you to some pretty spectacular country. Good luck!
If you can do a 2 step, meet me at RockNRodeo! It’s on Rosedale Highway near the DoubleTree.
Yeah, people used to tell me to go there when I was there on business about every other week.
Bakersfield isn’t exactly a jumping metropolis. Make some good friends and make use of the arena football, minor league baseball and hockey teams.
Also, Bakersfield is between the bay area and the L.A. area, so you’ll get some pretty big music acts deciding they might as well play there on a Thursday instead of just fart around, wating for the weekend dates in the big cities. The Eagles played Bakersfield. I was pretty surprised.
