On TCM Monday, December 18

Two good movies coming up:

10am Eastern; 7am Pacific

The Fugitive
1947
dir: John Ford
Henry Fonda, Dolores Del Rio

A classic of the “outlaw disguised as a priest” genre, based on a novel by Graham Greene. Along with The Informer and The Long Voyage Home, one of John Ford’s more self-consciously high-styled movies. Detractors of this film fault the film’s focus on gorgeous cinematography (by Gabriel Figueroa, whose sublime work on Emilio Fernández’s María Candelaria, 1944, brought him to Ford’s attention) at the perceived expense of theme and plot. This is hardly a unanimous opinion, however, and either way The Fugitive is worth your time.

And–

4:15am Eastern; 1:15am Pacific (technically on the 20th, but TCM’s schedule goes 6am to 6am)

Cry Terror
1958
dir: Andrew L. Stone
James Mason, Inger Stevens, Rod Steiger, Angie Dickinson

A taught little family-paranoia thriller. James Mason’s family is kidnapped by Rod Steiger. He’ll kill the little girl unless the mother, Inger Stevens, goes and gets the ransom money. Meanwhile, there’s a subplot involving Angie Dickinson, airliners, and plutonium, and Steiger’s portrayal of a startingly brutal psychopath keeps things moving along pretty briskly. Eye-openingly vicious, if a bit of a stretch suspension-of-disbelief-wise.

Gosh, I didn’t know that TCM scheduled a whole year in advance!

Oy. Should be December 19.

Are they hurtin’ that bad in the ratings that they have to relegate the really good stuff to pajama time?

They tend to put the “features” on in prime time, otherwise the schedule is always pretty mixed.
