On the Spot was a new semi-improve show that was on the WB tonite after the depressingly bad JKX. I only got to catch the first 10 minutes or so, but I really liked what I saw.
It’s not trying to be WLIIA, and I think the use of audience participation will add an element of chance that can really spice up a show.
I think they either need to tone down the special guests, or make sure they can maintain that level for a while though. A dangerous ploy, guest stars.
Anyone else?
Well, it wasn’t awful. And there a couple of good moments, mainly with the two leads (the manager and asst. manager), who seemed like they had the right handle on the format. Whenever the Drew Carey show did the same stunt, it always seemed “off,” a little smarmy, and the regulars who aren’t on “Whose Line” seemed really uncomfortable with it. This seemed better organized, probably because it wasn’t live.
I agree somewhat about the special guest stars, but a show like this is definitely going to need more gimmicks like that if it’s going to run for any length of time. The format itself can only be novel for so long.
And shame on them for doing that entertainer couple whose name I already forgot. It was just a shameless rip-off of the SNL sketch with Ana Gasteyer and Will Ferrell as the school music teachers’, plus the character from Mad TV who has “cabana boy.”
It’ll be interesting to see how long it lasts before it’s buried under the weight of all the gimmicks. I was glad to see Tim Conway back on TV, which surprised me – I wouldn’t have thought he was funny anymore; I thought he had already gone the way of Leslie Nielsen and the straight-to-video “comedy” routines.
It was ok. Head and shoulders above all the other unscripted fare these days… I really dislike reality tv.
That was Cabana Chat with Dixie Wentworth
