on West Virginia

Were The College Inn and The Bull Pen still there when you were there?

Here’s the column for anyone who’s interested.

Nope, we have coyotes in western PA and I’ve seen a few. This was huge. Maybe a wolf hybrid.

I grew up in WV and went to WVU. If I could have found a job anywhere near there I would still be there today.

My parents are both from West Virginia - my mother from Fairmont, my father from near Charleston. They met while they were students at WVU, and I was born in the university hospital in Morgantown.

When I was 1 we moved to Texas, which is where I grew up. I was too young to remember living in WV, but we had (and still have) lots of family back there, and took numerous vacations to visit them - I always had a great time there. Beautiful place, with lots to do.

When did you graduate?

I visited there a few times during my masters and doctoral studies, specifically here.

A lot of astronomical history there (and I think the cell phone coverage gap is a good thing).

Friendly people, beautiful environment, wide skies, what’s not to love?

Born and raised, and proud of the fact. Too many Mountaineers in here for my Taste though whare are the Marshall Alums??

(Seriously, am glad for the Basketball winnings as long as you’re not playing us, I’m glad to wear Blue & Gold!)

1976-1982, so Surly Chick and I had some overlap. I’ve never learned to like beer, so I hung out at Chico’s, which, despite its spelling, was pronounced CHICK-ohs. It, sadly, is long gone. Depending on when you were there, engineer_comp_geek, we might have ridden the PRT together, since I was a theater major.

janis_and_c0, I’m a born-and-raised West-by-God-Virginian, too. And my sister works for Marshall. Go, Herd!

Ha! I was a voice major my first year so we were in the same building. Maybe we passed each other in the hall.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s beautiful. But there’s Tudor’s Biscuit World there, and that makes all the difference.

If I were a bit more insane, I’d open one up here. There’s a ton of WV-expats in Columbus.

Please Please tell me what I can do to up your insanity level!!!

I believe The College Inn was there, but don’t recall The Bull Pen.

My favs included: Doctor John’s (aka DJ’s) and Mutts (long-time holes in Sunnyside); newer (as in opened in late '90s) joints in Sunnyside such as Terrapin Station, Sunnyside Sound Garden (aka Sunnyside Sound Emporium, etc.), Cornerpocket Saloon…

And of course Nyabinghi Dancehall downtown (formerly known as The Underground Railroad and now known as 123 Pleasant Street).

Another well-known place was The Back Door, where my brother was a bouncer.

check this out, it made me homesick as hell.

damn, I hope that link works, it’s a long one.

I have been to WV and it’s gorgeous.
Just realized I have nothing else to contribute.

I lived in WV for almost 10 years and I’m married to a WV boy. We’re both Marshall graduates. GO HERD!

We left nearly 2 years ago - no jobs, no opportunity. He misses it, I don’t - but then I didn’t grow up there.

No need to go all  on me. I wasn’t, like, needling you or anything. Music trivia is my thing, that’s all. Plus, John Denver was the first real concert I saw (I was 14) and SVB opened for them, and damn, Afternoon Delight is just about their worst song. They reminded me a lot of the Mamas and the Papas, with their harmony and their lyrics. . .But Danoff wrote a lot of songs that became hits for John Denver, and as far as I know, they were friends until Denver’s death.

PS: I often tell my hubby “This is why I can’t do math; my brain is too full of this crap!”

Born & raised in WV, will probably be dead and buried here too.

You totally should! I’d be there. What in the hell would the Buckeye biscuit be, though?

My favorite is the Herd. NOM NOM NOM

Waaaah! Me, too. That photo of the glowing fall trees with the glowering storm clouds – I have seen that so many times. Spectacular!
